Dear chiefsub68:

Many thanks for your post to the Ireland Reaching Out message board and welcome to the site.

Thank you also for your willingness to share information about the Max family with others.

Would you consider creating a profile for this family on the XO Chronicles?  The tab is located at the top of the page.

It can be accessed here:

https://www.irelandxo.com/ireland-xo/history-and-genealogy

The XO Chronicles are updated every week and read by many of our members.  In addition, they are a database whereby others researching family names can access them and collaborate if they have new information.

Again, thank you for your interest in Ireland Reaching Out and your willingness to share family information.  If there is anything else that we can assist with, please let us know.

Kind regards,

Jane.

Hi Jane

I am doing some work for my husband on the Max family. His great grandmother was a Judy Ryan who married James Max about 1854.

Best wishes

Hi Lindsay:

Ryan is my married name.  My husband's family were originally from near Cahir in Dundrum, Tipperary.  They were evicted from there during Cromwellian times and were moved to County Clare.

All the best,

Jane

Hi, I have some information on max family of Ballytarsna

Tessacat

Hi Tessacat

My husband is the grandson of Richard Max (1855-1919) who married Elizabeth Harris (1870-1961) of Shabbington, Buckinghamshire, England. Richard Max was the son of James Max and Judy Ryan. Richard's brother Joseph Max (1867-1941) who was the blacksmith at Ballinure.

The family story was that James Max or his father(?) was disowned probably for marrying a Catholic servant girl. We know that there was a close relationship between Richard Max and the children of John Max 1816-1885 and Mary Sheppard 1830-1916. They often called each other cousins. In about 1907 Ethel Maud Max 1876-1962 and her husband Henry Oliver Langley offered Richard Max a job and a cottage at Archerstown. He worked there until he died in 1919. In 1966 Richard Max's daughter Johanna and her family visited Archerstown and were welcomed by the Langley family. In 1975 I visited Archerstown with my husband Richard and we were also welcomed. Unfortunately my husband Richard never asked for the full story.

Do you know anything about the links between the two families? I have a number of emails from Lydia Langley which lays out much of the family history including the Max families of Ballytarsna and Maxfort but doesn't cover the link.

Best wishes Lindsay + Richard Offer

Joseph Max married my Great Grandmother Mary and is listed on the 1901 census along with his step children James, Michael and Catherine. Michel is my Grandfather I never met. His daughter, my mother married an O’Donovan from County Cork and we left Ireland in the early 1950s.

I have just returned from a trip to Ballinure, Killenaule and Portarlington where Michael and his family lived worked and are buried. My mother’s brother can recall meeting  the Blacksmith Joseph Max and described him as a huge man with beard. He spoke very well of him.
