GLEESON & BOURKE
Anyone related to this family from the CULLEN area? Or have access to actualBDM records that maygive me proof?
Launcelot GLEESON, wife, Bridget BOURKE.
Known children:
Johanna (Limerick?, Tip & Beechworth, Victoria, Australia.) Daniel (Tip) Malachi (Tip? & Providence, Rhode Island, USA.) Mark (Tip, Liverpool, Lancashire & Mt Lloyd, (near New Norfolk) Tasmania, Australia.)
Griffiths Valuation has Launcelot GLEESON in Milltown (Next to the village of Cullen.)
(Parish of Cullen, Diocese of Emly and Cashel.)
A Marcus GLEESON had land next door and in Ballinulty.
Daughter Johanna GLEESON, is given as born in Gortavalla Limerick. Circa 1834.
Launcelot's occupation is listed as "Gentleman" on Johanna's marriage certificate. She emigrated to Victoria, Australia, believed to be the Johanna GLEESON who arrived on the "Lady Kennaway" in 1853.
Married James BULLEID in Victoria in 1856. Story of "staying with an Aunty in Beechworth" prior to her marriage. Five children.
The GLEESON family were living in Tipperary by 1849, when Launcelot, his wife, and son Daniel were assaulted on the road home from the town of Tipperary. The court case was reported in the newspaper.
Son Daniel GLEESON, birth and age unknown, listed as the son in the assault reported in the newspaper report above. Gave evidence in court.
My be the Daniel GLEESON who married Bridget MORRISSY and had son Marks GLEESON in Tipperary in 1865. Marks Gleeson was listed as living in Ballinulty as one of the "Farmers & Residents" in 1881.
Son Malachi GLEESON/GLEASON born circa 1845, where, unknown. Emigrated to the USA, possibly via Canada, dates unknown.
Malachi GLEASON, was married in Providence, Rhode Island, 9 January, 1876 to Ellen McCORMICK, also born Ireland. He died there in 1877, leaving a son, Malachi Daniel and deceased infant twins.
Some dates given in available USA BDM records online do not add up. Malachi senior is given to have died on 23 April, 1877 and son Malachi is given as born to him and Ellen on 19 November, 1878.
Son Mark GLEESON/LEESON. Years of birth given, vary wildly between 1844 to 1852. When and where unknown. He is my Great Grandfather - who told a lot of fibs.
He was living in Liverpool, Lancashire in 1869 when he was reported in the newspaper as a "young policeman" and was then listed as a policeman aged 23 (=1848) from Cashel, Tipperary, Ireland, in the 1871 Liverpool Census. A Mark GLEESON is named as the Hospital Porter in an alleged assault case in later newspaper article.
Mark GLEESON Emigrated to Australia on the ship "Aconcagua", arriving in Melbourne, Victoria, in 1879. He was now listed as aged 27 (=1852) and "English".
He then must have immediately taken a coastal vessel to Tasmania, where he had received a Land Order Warrant for a small plot of land through the Emigrants & Colonists Aid Corporation. He settled at Mt Lloyd, near New Norfolk.
His surname thereafter was always given as LEESON, except in the occasional Government Gazette and always stated he was "from Lancashire" (even in his will) and hid his origins.
There may have been scandal, a possible illegitimate daughter in Liverpool. However, I can find no previous marriage that would explain why he never married Jane Emily CLARK the mother of his nine children.
He hid this fact, stating when official records demanded it, that they HAD married in "1878 in Victoria" (a year before he arrived in Australia) This statement was also, presumably, to hide the birth of Jane's unregistered illegitimate son, whom he had taken on as his own.
Their first child was baptised Protestant. Baptisms for two children have not been found. The rest were baptised as Wesleyans.
Mark himself, was buried as a Methodist (Wesleyan-Methodist).
His Obituary says "Late of Lancashire" in the 84th year of his age (=1844) His official death record states aged 75 (=1852) His Burial record states aged 82 (=1845)
Any help or suggestions gratefully received.
