Looking for information on Quinlan's from the Rossmore area.  Looking for family of Richard Quinlan born c1814 and sailed to Australia 1841.  Have no knowledge of parents or siblings.  Researching for elderly aunt who wishes to know her great grandfathers history.  Thanks

I found this death record in South Australian genealogy website - Richard QuinlanBirth Year:abt 1814Age:66Death Date:20 Jun 1880Death Place:Rossmore Hd Of MileResidence Place:Rossmore Stanley FlatRegistration Place:Clare, South Australia - seems like it might be your guy. Many other records for him there ie his children. Could he be from Rossmore Ire and move to Rossmore SA? My ggg grandmother was Margaret Quinlan born 1832 Tipperary, in SA by 1855, possibly a relative. Cheers, Jess.

Hi Jess

Thank you for your reply, this is my great great grandfather.  I am trying to locate his family in Ireland.

Do you know where Margaret was born?  That would be a great help as there are many many Margaret Quinlans and Quinlans in general.  I have been to Ireland twice and been to Rossmore with no luck.  No Quinlans live there anymore and no one seems to know anything :(

Kind regards

Deb

Hi Deb, nice to hear from you! I am having similar problems with Margaret. I have bought her marriage, death and a child's birth certificate but due to the lack of full records in SA it hasn't been any use. She was born about 1832.  From her obituary I know she was reportedly from Tipperary and immigrated in 1855. Her marriage in 1859 states her father was Lawrence Quinlan, and she named a son Lawrence so this looks correct. No parish records of a Margaret born to Lawrence though on Roots Ireland. I have found an Ancestry DNA match who is desended from a Quinlan from Rossmore which is how I came to your post. His tree had a Lawrence Quinlan born in 1876 in Rossmore so may be a distant relative. I felt Lawrence Quinlan was relatively unusual and worth following up as a family name. So I'm afraid I'm the blind helping the blind! How wonderful to have been to Ireland, warm regards Jess.

Hi Maeve and Jess.

I found Quinlans in civil parishes of Clogher  and Clonoulty, in Griffiths Valuation.   www.askaboutireland. ie Tipp south and Barony  of Kilnamanagh lower .

The Catholic  Church  records   for the Parish  of Clonoulty/Rossmore,  now  on line free at www.registersnli.ie.

They start in 1805,

Best of luck,  Let me know how you get on.

Christina.

Hi Jess and Christina

With the scant knowledge I have on Richard I have been trawling the National Library of Ireland Catholic Church records for Clonoulty/Rossmore for a few years now and have found several instances of possible family connections.  I have tried to follow the Irish tradition of naming but over time they do not always follow pattern.

There are Quinlans from Skeheenarinky that I found from the Griffiths Valuation that I do not believe to be part of Richard's family.

I found another Richard Quinlan from the Rossmore area, of approximately the same birth date so this has been confusing also.  This Richard was a widower with at least three children I have been able to locate.

Jess if you would like to email me at kermit_bullfrog@hotmail.com with any information that you have on Margaret I may be able to help you a little further.  Lawrence (Laurence) was a popular name in our family,  Have you researched the SA Genealogical and Historical Society records?

Kind regards

Deb

Deb, that trawling sounds very exciting and is an avenue new to me! I will gather my info and email you in person, that's great - many thanks to you! Speak soon!

Warm regards

Hi everyone, I know it is almost 4 and half years later but I have been following this thread. My 3x gr grandfather Malachy Quinlan was baptized in Clonoulty,Tipperary Ireland Sept. 1813. He was the son of Tim Quinlin and Mary Ryan. I suspect all of the Quinlans from that area are somehow related. I posted a message earlier this afternoon about Malachy's daughter who was baptized in Moneygall, Tipperary Ireland in 1838 and had a twin sister Margaret. I don't think they are the same Margaret but could very well be related. I am making a trip to Ireland in 2024 and would love to find some distance relatives. Do any of these names pop up on your tree? Do you have any additional information on your branches? warmly, Debbie Colson colsonmc79@woh.rr.com

Hi Debbie It is probable the Quinlans are related but I do not have anyone from that area nor a Malachy. Check out the Griffith Valuation of the area with and also Find My Past is a good resource as is Roots Ireland. Good luck Deb

Hi Maeve,

Since I emailed this thread last, I have found more info on the Quinlans from Co. Tipperary. My 4x great grandfather from around 1730 was John Quinlan and he married Sarah Bryne. They had over 10+ kids from the Clonoulty Co. Tipperary area. Are you on Gedmatch? If so and you are comfortable, please send me an email with your Gedmatch no. or I can send you mine. Please email me at:

thank-you,

Hi Maeve

I am related to both Richard and Margaret Quinlan. Both are from Rossmore and Margaret was Richard’s Niece. Get in touch if you are still interested.

Hi Maeve and Margaret,

Are you both on Gedmatch? My Gedmatch no. is LX4136016. I have been doing more with my Quinlans from Co. Tipperary. I am going to look through my research later today.

Debbie Colson

Debbie CM

No Debbie and Maeve

I am not on Gedmatch. Richard Quinlan is my grandmother's great uncle.

He was born in Rossmore in the parish of Clonoulty, Co Tipperary and he was baptised there in February 1815.

His parents were Jeremiah (Jerry) Quinlan c 1780 and Ellen (Nelly) Humphries.

His siblings include:

  • Honora Quinlan (1825-1907). She was my great grandmother and married Edmond Ryan (09/08/1817 - 13/01/1900). They are know locally, as Ryan Martins.  You may know that Ryan is such a common name in Tipperary most Ryans have a nickname.
  • Ellen Quinlan 1812
  • Judith Quinlan 1808
  • Darby Quinlan 1805

Margaret Ryan (1862 - 1954) was the daughter of Honora Quinlan and Edmond Ryan. She was baptised in Clonoulty, Tipperary on 19 November 1862.  Richard Quinlan was her uncle and likely the reason she left Ireland for South Australia aged 27. In 1903, she married her first cousin John Quinlan.  Her age was listed as 38 but she was 40 or 41 when they married.  They had one daughter Bridget (Bridie) who I believe was a nun. I doubt that either Margaret or Richard ever saw Ireland again. Margaret lived to the ripe old age of 91 and died in 1954.

I am from Tipperary but live in Queensland. I had never heard about these relatives so I was amazed to find I have cousins all over the Country including many in SA including you Maeve!  Unfortunately, I don't have any information about the other Quinlan siblings and whether there are any Quinlan relatives left in the area. The Ryan Martins are still in the area and are connected with the townsland of Gorteenamona in Rossmore. There is still a relative on the farm.  Hope you get to see this Maeve.

Debbie it is likely that your Quinlans are related but sorry I don't have any information that might connect. Good luck and keep us posted

Hi I am going to continue to look at your Quinlans.

Here is my 3x great grandfather who was born in Clonoulty. I have other documents that I can verify Malachy is my 3x gr grandfather. His father Tim was the son of John Quinlan and Sarah Byrne. John and Sarah had 10+ kids but I do not have all of Tim's siblings verified. Two of John Quinlan's kids Margaret Quinlan Tierney and Lawrence Quinlan have descendants that are my DNA cousins.

I will be back in Ireland next Sept.; I would love to find distant cousin in the Clonoulty area.

I also have some distant Quinlans in Co. Offaly; Moneygall.I met some of them and one of the Volunteers met me for a Meet and Greet. It was great.

I also know half of Co. Tipperary last name is Ryan. My 4x gr grandmother was a Ryan.

Hi Debbie

Margaret Quinlan Tierney is definitely in my family tree but a long way back. When I get some time I will have a look. The Richard Quinlan connection is on my father’s side but my mother was a Quinlan with ancestors around Sologhead and Cullen. It is believed they may have come from Clonoulty before this but I don’t have any evidence of this.

I will attach a photo of a Tierney headstone from Kilpatrick cemetery Co Tipperary with Margaret Quinlan Tierney’s name.

Margaret B

Me again Deb. I would say there is a very good chance that your Tim Quinlan and my Lawrence Quinlan were brothers. Unfortunately the baptism records don’t go back that far. Have a good look around Kilpatrick cemetery in Annacarthy. You might find something useful. Assume you have looked through the Old Cemetery records for Clonoulty?

Margaret B

Thank you Margaret. I will look into the Kilpatrick Cemetery. I also want to look through old cemetery records for Clonoulty. It sounds like Tim, Lawrence and Margaret were sibings

Debbie CM

Hi Margaret

Lovely to hear from you!  So much information and yes you are right, Margaret Ryan daughter of Honora Quinlan and Edmond Ryan did marry her first cousin John Quinlan son of Richard and Lucy (nee Naulty) Quinlan.  Their daughter Bridie did not become a nun but John's two sisters Ellen and Bridget became Sisters of Saint Joseph, Ellen became Sr Michael and Bridget became Sr Hyacinth who founded the Black Josephites.  So welcome to this big extended family!  I believe that Jeremiah Quinlan worked for Cornwallis Maude of Dundrum House.

John, Ellen and Bridget's brother Lawrence is my great grandfather.

There are still many relatives in the Clare Valley of South Australia from Richard and Lucy, there is also a family history book on the Naulty family which includes the descendants of Richard and Lucy, if you are interested.   Lucy emigrated to Australia in 1846 with her mother and siblings after her father had passed away from County Wicklow.

I have tried to document Honora and Edmond's family but have found very little information.  We visited Rossmore and Clonoulty on a visit to Ireland.  If you would be willing to share information I would be grateful.  You may contact me here or by email if you would prefer.  debdollard@hotmail.com

I look forward to hearing from you and apologies in the delay in responding here as I have just returned from a three week holiday and am only just now catching up on all my emails.

Kind regards

Hi Marge,

I had AI transcribed the gravestone of Margaret Quinlan Tierney. It did a decent job. I am going back to Ireland in Sept. and will try to find this grave. Are there any others in Kilpatrick or Killian you would like me to look for?

Hi Christina (volunteer)

also Margaret, Deb Maeve

I am headed to Co. Tipperary in a few weeks, Christina. I have emailed the Tipperary Studies several times with a question on Tim Quinlan who died 1827 and was buried in Killian Cemetery with no luck. He appears to be the sister to Margaret Quinlan Tierney from the records that I have seen. I would like to visit/find his grave. Do you have any suggestions on who else I could contact?

Graveyard inscription for Timothy Quinlan

    • In the transcribed inscriptions for Killinan Graveyard (near Thurles, County Tipperary), there is an entry:

“Erected by John Quinlan in memory of his father Timothy Quinlan, who died June the 5th 1827 aged 80 years. May he rest in peace.” igp-web.com+2hiddentipperary.com+2

thank-you in advance,
