O'KEEFE/FENNESSY FAMILIES CAHER

Dear Roger McDonnell,

Many thanks for passing my message onto  Tom Hussey. He has been a great help!

Sincerely, Margot Middlin.

Dear Tom Hussey,

Thank you so much for your reply, and all your help.I am over the moon! It is so nice to know that all that time poring over Griffiths Valuations and Tithe Applotment Books has been worthwhile, to get the right Parish and Townland. At times it feels like I'm searching for a needle in a haystack!

I didn't realise that Ellen and Margaret had a brother Michael, and I have only just found Margaret's baptism in the last few weeks since Ancestry had their free month of searching the Irish Catholic Parish Registers.I have been very busy looking at those!

It is just incredible to think that descendants  of  the same family would still be living in the family home in the 1901 Census.I wouldn't have thought to look on the Censuses for more recent generations,so thank you for that, also for the accounts of Michael O'Keefe's property . Hopefully all this  will really improve my searching of my other Irish names.

Thank you once again, you have been a great help.

Sincerely,

Margot Middlin

Dear Tom,

I didn't know about most of the Assisted Passages from Tipperary were from Ned Ryan, and that most of them were from Clonoulty Parish.I've only just discovered  the date and the record  of John Griffin's baptism, and Clonoulty Parish,it's been very exciting finding all these new discoveries.

Many thanks once again for attaching  the records, they're brilliant.

Margot.

Dear Tom,

Many thanks for the information contained in those 2 attachments-the first one partially explains why I can't seem to find very many Co.Cavan records, now I know, for example  that  the Tithe Applotment Books were put under Co.Kerry, instead of Caher,  hopefully that will make for more  productive searching .Hopefully the other Catholic records will be released online eventually-not everyone is able to travel to Ireland from far-off places!

I found the account of the Browne family's emigration to Australia  to be an interesting peek into the life and times of that era in society, and also I was interested because my John Griffin's sister Julia married an Edmond Browne from Clonoulty Parish.

I'm not sure if they  died in Ireland or came out here, but I know that their children did,so they would almost certainly have been related.I found a lot of Brownes mentioned in in the Clonoulty  Catholic Parish Registers so it was all very interesting.

Thank you once again for your help, it is much appreciated.

Margot.

Greeting Magicmarg19,  My 2- g grandparents John O'Keeffe and his wife Bridget Costian were married in 1834 in Cahir.  I am still trying to find the townland for both, but believe Bridget Costigan may have lived at Mortelstown, Cahir.  John O'Keeffe's  home remains a mystery to me, but the family relocated to Fethard (Coolmoyne) by the arrival of their first child Jude by 1835. I would love to learn more about either the Costigan or O'Keeffe (Keeffe) families in the area prior to The Great Famine, which caused this family to immigrate to America in 1851.  Cheers, John O'Keefe

Hello Margot, John and my dear friend Tom Hussey,

I have Fennessys in my family tree. I'll attach a pdf file of one of the ancestral lines I have put together from my research over the past few years. Primarily researched from the Murphy (Ballinamona)  collection that now resides at the Thurles Library, local studies sestion. To explain... my great great grandmother Margaret Murphy and four of her sisters came to New South Wales arriving in January 1841 on the 'Alfred'.  Their mother was Elizabeth Murphy from Cashel and she married James Murphy of Cahir in 1801. One of their mother's sisters, the oldest one, Mary, married Richard Fennessy in approx. 1782-3, when she was aged 18yrs. Their Fennessy children were Margaret, Richard, William Rory and Kitty. They were probably living in County Tpperary as the first two children are named in their grandmother's 1800 will (she was Margaret Murphy nee Scully). One more piece of gigsaw for your ancestral puzzel. I will be posting a story about my Murphy research and the book I have finally self-published in XO chrnicles in the next weeks. Regards, LynStewart, New South Wales

Hello Lyn of the Cahir Murphy's,

My great grandmother was Ellen Scully, born 1845 Ardfinnan Parish and lived in/around Marlhill, near New Inn, just south of Cashel.  I read with interest about your 2nd great grandmother Margaret Scully Murphy, and I am wondering if we could be related.  Ellen Scully married Michael Barrett in 1866.  Her parents were John Scully and Catherine Ronayne.  Are those names in your tree?

Regards,

Robin Hastings nee Barrett

Hello Robin,

The Scullys are very numerous but your Scullys certainly hail from the Tipperary Scullys ancestral area. I know that my Margaret Murphy nee Scully was a sister of James Scully of Kilfeacle (died 1816). The best place to seach for Scully ancestrs is Anthony McCan's family genealogy pages. He has done a very thorough job and I suggest you go to his home page and start your search there for your John Scully (father of your Ellen. The link is https://www.genealogy.com/ftm/m/c/c/Anthony-Mccan-Cork/index.html

Please post again if you find what you are looking for. I'm intersted.     Regards Lyn
