Thornton, Price, Meagher & Ryan families
Hello,
My great-great grandfatherRichard Thornton, of Boherlahan, emigrated to the US at the time of the Great Hunger, arriving sometime in the early1850s. I have an approximate birth date for him of 1820, although some conflicting information lists his birth date as April 29, 1817. His parents were John Thornton & Catherine Price. Richard married Ellen (or Mary Ellen) Meagherin New York, probably in 1853 or 1854. She was born December 26,1830 and wasalso from County Tipperary. I found one source that names her parents as John Meagher and Mary Ryan.
I would like to confirm the information I have, as well as find any additional information about these families, including the parish of the Meagher family.
From my research here, I foundthat all of Richard's siblings alsoemigrated to the US, but that John and Catherine both remained in Ireland and presumably passed away there. I am especially interested in finding out when Johnand Catherine passed away, and if theirremains are buriedin a cemetery in the Boherlahan area.
On a side note, I know that the Thornton name (Norman name that it is)was an anglicised form of the originalIrish family name, whichwas most likely Draighnein. Is there any wayof conclusively establishing something like this?
Thank you,
Michael Thornton
