I located a probable baptism for your Thomas in the Catholic Registers of "Bansha and Kilmoyler" (Templeneiry) - a little earlier that your sources suggest, ages are quite commonly inaccurate in secondary sources - generally underestimated for adults

Date of baptism for Thomas is 29th October 1826 - see the following link to the Register (2497/01 image 19 NLI see right hand page) the sponsors (godparents) to the baptism were Thomas Phelan and Mary MacInerney - probably related to the parents.

No place of residence is recorded - the register appears to possibly be a later transcript, the details may have been copied from an older register in bad condition.

The Catholic parish covers the civil parish of Templeneiry which includes the town of Bansha and about 25 townlands including the large (over 900 acres) townland of Barnlough.

A further search of the parish shows at least five siblings to your Thomas - all younger, some with the variant - Whelan :

Michael (1827), Mary (1829), John (1830), Margaret (1833) and Denis (1836)

A the time of Griffith's Primary Valuation, which is dated October 1851 for this area, there were still three properties in Barlough townland listed for the Phelan surname - Denis, James & Thomas
