Wynne family(s) of Cloonloo, County Sligo.

I want to confirm information about my 3rd great grandfather, John Wynne:

  • Born: 28 Nov 1839, in Cloonloo, County Sligo, Diocese of Achonry, St Joseph Church.
  • Immigrated to USA: c1860. John "WINN" appears in two of New York's Castle Garden passenger lists. 25 May 1860 on the ship JOHN BRIGHT. Then again 10 July 1860 on the ship CYNOSURE. Could he have been returned to Liverpool in May then sailed again in July?
  • He appears in the 30 July 1860 U.S. Census for Champaign County, Ohio.
  • Married: in Ohio c1864 to Bridget Graham (1937-1917) of County Mayo.
  • Children: 6 – all born in Ohio
  • Death: 2 Feb 1921 in Evanston, Cook County, Illinois

Some U.S. records indicate he was from Roscommon, which I see is immediately east of Cloonloo.

John may have had a brother (or father) in Cloonloo named James Wynne (1809-1877).

The townland of Cloonloogh (Cloonloo) is in the civil parish of Killaraght and as you indicated the Co. Roscommon border is just to the east of Cloonloogh. The current RC Parish would be Gurteen which has subordinate chapels in Cloonloo (St. Joseph's) and St. Attracta's in Killaraght. I checked the 1837 Lewis Topographical Dictionary and there was a chapel in Cloonlagh (presumably Cloonloo) in 1837. https://achonrydiocese.org/parishes/sligo/gurteen/

I could not locate any Tithe listings for Killaraght civil parish and the Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for the parish did not show any Wynne records in Cloonloogh townland. No Wynne's in the 1901 census for Cloonloogh.

You mentioned a James Wynne (1809-1877) as a relation. I did not find an 1877 death record but did locate an 1878 James Wynne death record in the general area. He was a bachelor and lived in the townland of Cuilmore in the civil parish of Kilfree to the west of Killaraght.
