An illegal or unlawful oath in Irish history was a secret pledge used by agrarian and nationalist societies—such as the United Irishmen, Ribbonmen, or Whiteboys—binding members to mutual secrecy, rebellion, or refusing to inform on crimes, which the British administration criminalized through a series of Unlawful Oaths Acts
