Searching famine immigrant Patrick Cawley from Sligo

Sligo

My great-grandfather Patrick Cawley emigrated to the USA from Sligo (Port of Sligo) in June of Black 47 and lived in upstate New York for his entire life. My research of American sources shows no mention of siblings or other family from Ireland so I have always assumed he was a lucky surviror of that terrible time. He was a Roman Catholic. Statements of his birth year in various American census documents indicate he was born around 1822. His death certificate provided by his wife who was 18 years his junior and illiterate, according to census results, lists his parents as Michael Cawley and Mary Grayham. An inquiry I mailed to the Sligo Heritage Centre 30 years ago found no results. Since then, I have learned that Greghan is a popular name in Sligo and caused me to wonder if my great-grandmother had got his mothers name wrong. Spelling has been a challenge throughout my research as I came to realize that 19th century folks and officials oftenrendered information orally instead of in written format. I have found family under Cawley, Cauley and Colley!

I will be in Sligo next month to tour the area and with the proliferation of the Internet wondered if some resources have been made available to long-distance, or even visiting, researchers. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome back to Ireland Reaching Out!

Like most counties in the West of Ireland, the RC parishes in Co. Sligo usually do not have records back to 1822. I did do a search on Roots Ireland in Co. Sligo from 1817-1827 for a Patrick Cawley baptismal record with father Michael and got no record. So likely his baptismal record is not available.

More and more resources for Irish resources have been made available online but it won't help you with Patrick but maybe would assist with other family ancestors. Last fall the Irish government made civil record images available for free for certain records: births 1864-1915 marriages 1882-1940 deaths 1891-1960?  They can be found at www.irishgenealogy.ie

Two years ago the 19th century parish registers were placed online at registers.nli.ie  but you need to know your parish otherwise you have a lot of searching to do.

Have you considered autosomal DNA testing?

Let me know if you have any questions and have a great trip!

Hello conanthelibrarian

To my ear "Greyham" sounds like Graham. Do you know his wife's name or if they married in Ireland, before emigrating?

Thank you, Roger McDonnell!!  As you say, not knowing the parish, it will take me a long time to trace my Cawley ancestors in church records but that appears to be my lot.  HOWEVER, you're identifying the Irishgenealogy.ie site has allowed me to make great progress in discovering information about ancestors in the other Irish ancestry branches of my family tree in other counties!  I will be posting followup questions to those areas soon. With great appreciation, James Cosgrove
