Patrick Gannon

Sligo

My father's birth father was Patrick Gannon who left Ireland and settled in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania USA around 1929-1931. He was involved with Mary Griffin of Galway who had known Patrick in Ireland. So I am not sure when he left Sligo for Galway. He left Pittsburgh before Mary gave birth to my dad which is February 1932. The family had said he left Pittsburgh for Chicago and a newspaper report given to us by a family member showed Patrick Gannon died in Illinois in 1979. He had no children other than my dad, and apparently never married. But I would like to know about his life in Sligo. Since there are no immediate relatives, I believe there is little danger of scandal! If anyone from the family is interested, I will be in Sligo this summer, probably sometime in August.

Any idea when Patrick was born? Thanks.

Also, what is your father's first name? Have you seen the birth certificate? Does it indicate Patrick's age or occupation?

Hello Patricia, Patrick is his first name and I haven't seen his birth certificate but he is named as the father on my dad's birth certificate. I do know he stayed in the USA, but Mary went back to Galway without the baby. My father had jet black, very curly hair is tall (6'2") and very handsome with blue eyes. I am guessing that Patrick Gannon was quite the looker. And I wonder if that dark haired look is common in all the western cities of Ireland (with the blue eyes, it is an unusual combination)

Any idea when Patrick Sr. was born?

glanvil3@aol.com

Hi Patricia, Patrick Gannon would be around Mary's age and she was born in 1907. I did find a Patrick Gannon in Illinois from online records who was born in Sligo in 1904 and died in 1979 in Illinois.

Thank you.

My father's first name is also Patrick. His birth certificate lists his birthday as February 23rd, but he was adopted from an orphanage in Pittsburgh and he was led to believe his birthday was February 22nd. That made it difficult to get information until I got the adoption record opened and made the discovery. He is still with us, celebrated his 93rd birthday in Pittsburgh (on February 22nd!). Perhaps the family of his birth father back in Sligo would like to know that Patrick Gannon does have a legacy in my dad. Patrick Gannon also has five grandchildren he never knew, and now seven great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren. One of the great grandchildren is named Cole Patrick, so the Patrick endures for another generation.

Patrick,

Have you considered having your father take a DNA test? This would be one way of potentially discovering close relatives..

Another idea...Are there siblings or other relatives mentioned in the obituary? You might be able to trace one of them back to Sligo, which would give you information about Patrick's place of origin and his family.

glanvil3@aol.com

There may have been names mentioned in the Obituary. I haven't been able to find it in online archives but other sources show Patrick and two sisters, none of whom have partners or offspring. Seems like this line of Gannons ended with them. I may try the Facebook page next. Thank you for the ideas.
