Mullowney family Sligo / Tullylin - help requested

Sligo

I am researching my family prior to a visit to Sligo (October 14 - 16). My great grandmother was Annie Mullowney (Maloney when she came to USA). The below is info I have collected and am fairly confident in its authenticity (realizing exact dates etc. may be off a bit)

Annie was born in 1865 in Tullylin and emigrated to USA in about 1890 and settled in Chicago. She married John Allen in 1890 in Chicago. John was from Limerick, I believe.

Her father was Martin (b. Abt 1830 and d, 1926 in Tullyin. Her mother was Abbie / Penelope / Nappy Howley b. abt. 1830 and died 1900 in Tullylin.

It appears that Annie had 5 full siblings and 3 half siblings:

  • Thomas Mullowney. 1860
  • Catherine Mullowney McKendry b. 1863 (died in Chicago)
  • Patrick Mullowney b. 1868
  • Martin Mullowney b. 1871
  • Michael Mullowney b. 1874
  • John Donnegan b. 1855 *
  • Mark Donnegan b. 1856*
  • Edward Donnegan b. 1858*

Their mother - Abbie / Penelope / Nappy Howley was married to a Patrick Donnegan until his death in 1858 at age 38. She then married Martin in 1860.

Would love to now learn the "soft stuff", visit the area where they lived, worshipped (Catholic), and are buried. Where did she emigrate from (Queenstown / Cobh?)...

Would be most grateful for any help.

Mike:

Here is a link to the present day RC church in Castleconor https://www.killaladiocese.org/parishes-ministries/parish-details/?parishID=8   They parish office may have information on where Martin (and Anne) were buried.

I did find another child named Anne born in 1865. See link. https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/files/civil/supp_births/2348840x.pdf

I found the baptismal records on Roots Ireland for Thomas and Catherine but not the younger four children. I scanned the 1874 parish records and did find a January 18th 1874 record for Michael. Handwriting was not very legible which explains why Roots Ireland did not have this record.

Mike:

I also located some land records. The 1833 Tithe listings for Tullylin show a John Mullowney. John Mullowney Jr. and a James Mullowney.

The Griffiths Valuation head of household listing shown a John Mullowney in Tullylin.

Likely the John Jr. In 1833 is the John  shown in the Griffiths and possibly he is the father of Martin?

Hi Roger -

Thank you for this.

I am unsure what it is telling me...Is it that John (sr) and two sons John Jr and James occupied (but did not own) some land owned by a William O.....(illegible)?

And the "tithe" is a tax to either the Church or the local government?

Thanks for helping to educate me!

Mike

Mike:

The Tithe was a tax payable to the Church of Ireland Rector for the parish of Castleconor.

John Mullowney, his son John and a James Mullowney were each leasing land from Williams Ormsby-Gore. Three acres for John Sr., one acre for John Jr. and six acres for James.

We can't tell if James was a brother to John Sr. or a cousin. We do know that a John Mullowney was shown leasing land in Tullylin in 1857 per the Griffiths Valuation. I speculated that this John could be the father of Martin but I have no proof. He could be an uncle. At the link is an 1878 civil death record for a John Mullowney (age 80) in Tullylin. The informant was a Dominick Hallinan. See third record

Likely there was a steward managing the land for William Ormsby-Gore  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Ormsby-Gore_(1779%E2%80%931860)
