Connolly Family, butchers, possibly of Tobercurry
I am trying to find possible relatives in Ireland with whom I can connect on my upcoming visit. My great-great grandparents, Thomas Connolly and Mary Gallagher, left Ireland and arrived in the United States in 1850. They setled in Essex County, NJ, living in Newark, Belleville, Orange, and Franklin. They operated the "Shamrock Hotel" in Orange. He, and several of his sons, were butchers, and had been butchers in Ireland. One son, Patrick, became a priest in NJ and rose to the rank of monsignor.A close relative, Martin J. Connolly, also a butcher, came to the United States around 1870, settled first in New Brunswick, Middlesex County, NJ, and then in Bergen County, NJ. Family tradition says they came from Tobercurry, but I have not been able to confirm this.
