Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
The parents were married in 1893 in Co. Leitrim. See civil marriage record below and the 1898 civil birth record for William. You will have to sign-in to see the record. I did not see them in the 1901 census in Co. Sligo or Co.Leitrim. Did they leave Ireland before 1901?

Roger,
Thanks for that. It confirms the info I have, but is great to see the actual details. The witnesses at the wedding are worth following to see where that takes me.
I am puzzled by the leap from a farmer in 1893 to being a shop keeper in 1898. Where there any shops in Drinaghan?
The Connolly's left for Glasgow in 1901 and appear in the Scottish census for that year.
Thanks again for helping me with the links to the registered details.

Likely it was a small shop in a rural area. The 1901 census for Drinaghan showed one small shopkeeper and the rest were farmers.

Thanks Roger,
I have looked in the Drinaghan census for 1901 and 1911 and cannot see any shopkeepers, but I will keep looking.
Regards,
Gerard

There are a couple Drinaghans but here is the record I located.

Thanks again Roger.
The McGloin side is my grandmother. On my father's birth certificate along with his two sisters and a brother record Joseph Connolly as being a shopkeeper. The older sisters were born in Lecklasser and the boys in Drinaghan. You can see your previous link proved very useful.
I have three references for my grandfather, Joseph, given to him before he came over to Scotland (circa 1899) and they all assess his skills as a "cafer" and very good with animals. You can see why I am puzzled about his shopkeeping experience. Is this a deliberate deception or is something else going on. Who knows?
Mmm! I don't imagine either of us will solve this one.
Cheers!
