John and Mary (Kivlin) McDermott; Michael and Anna (Killerlain) Kivlin.

Drumcliff (Sligo)

I need help finding the townlands my great great grandparents left for America. This birth record puts the Kivlins in Drumcliff Parish in 1849. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FRCF-B93?from=lynx1UIV7 ; (Image 33 in the collection.) Michael was born about 1820. Anna was born about 1818. The family left  Ireland in 1854, settling in Rutland, Vermont, and then moving on in 1861 to Wisconsin. Michael Kivlin's death certificate lists James Kivlin and Mary Hunt as his parents. 

This birth record puts the McDermotts in Drumcliff Parish in 1843.  https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FRCN-6MJ?from=lynx1UIV7 (im… 9)  John McDermott was born about 1810. Mary Kivlin McDermott was born about 1817. Her death certificate listed her parents as Pat Kivlin and Mollie Mitchel. The couple lived in Rutland, Vermont, in 1860 and moved on to Wisconsin about 1866.

Likely the surname was Kivelehan or Killehan in Ireland and then shortened in America.

I think it will be difficult to pinpoint the exact townlands where your ancestors came from. The RC parish records did not list the townland on the baptismal records. The Tithe records for Drumcliff civil parish do not have any records for the surnames of your family. Your ancestors left before the 1858 Griffiths Valuation.

However, when you scan the records of the Griffiths, https://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/sligo/drumcliff.php ; it would appear that Rosses Lower or Rosses Upper would be a possible location for the Kivelehans and the Killerlanes. There is no likely location for the McDermotts.

Have you considered DNA testing? Possibly you will have a match with someone who has more info on where the families came from within Drumcliff parish.

Thomas, Peter , Patrick and Michael Kivlin (chose your spelling) were all naturalized in Rutland County Vermont. The Castleton branch stuck around here where early baptisms have them as Kivlahan and they end up as Keevlans.

Hi, Thanks for writing. I knew of the Rutland connection, a deep one in Dane County, Wisconsin (Madison) which boasts of a Rutland Township. The other Kivlins are siblings? On Ancestry.com, my Welch Family Tree has what I know of the Kivlins. (Edward and Anne Walsh and family arrived in Rutland in the late 1840s from Crossmolina County Mayo.) Rosses Point is all tourism today so there's very little to see from the 1850s. I have pictures if you'd like. toddmason@centurylink.net
