Kilmartin/Gilmartin

I cannot say my Kilmartin ancestors came from Ahamlish Parish, but I do know my great great grandfather and his parents were from Sligo. As there are a large number of Kilmartins (and variant spellings) from the parish, I though it would be prudent to post here and monitor. My great great grandparents were DANIEL KILMARTIN and ELENORA CARTY (both RC). According to a birth record of one of their daghters in Glasgow theymarriedin Sligo, Aug. 27,1843. Where exactly, I don't know. Elenora (Helen)was from Roscommon as were her parents. She was baptised in 1826 (LDS). They had one Irish child, Michael, baptised Drumcliff & Magherow, Dec. 4, 1845 (LDS). They emigrated to Glasgow, likely around 1848, and had several more children. Daniel's parents were DANIEL KILMARTIN and CATHERINE LADEN, according to younger Daniel's death record in 1898 in Glasgow. I have provided all the info,' that I am aware of in hopes that now, or in the future someone can help me out or evendiscover a connection. Another family historian has graciously done some searches for me on a pay site, but could not find anyevidence of my ancestors. So. Here I am! I'm afraid I had no luck with birth or baptism records for your Kilmartins on www.rootsireland.ie/

However I wonder if you have seen the Kilmartins in the Tithe Applotments (free online) which have 111 Kilmartins in Sligo including 2 Daniels in Ahamlish 1826- 1836.

I tried searching on rootsireland for Ahaglish R C parish marriages of Kilmartins 1843 + - 10 years and found 11- all Gilmartins. It's a bit tedious to write Spouses & years but the Gilmartins were:

Patrick, Margaret, John, Michael, Edward, John (3) Sara, James & Patrick.

These were those whose spouse's first names began with E or C so there must be many more!

Hello Col, and thanks for the welcome!  It appears your results were the same as my recent contact had. Nada.  As both my Kilmartin ancestors were born in Ireland, likely both in Sligo, both named Daniel, you'd think it would lessen the challenge, but I guess not.  Mind you, Daniel appears to be a popular name for Kilmartins/Gilmartins!  I suppose my contact has similar or the same resources as you.  I don't know what to suggest as the info' I posted is everything I have on that branch of my Irish ancestry.  Limited.  Darn.  As far as the various Applotment, Griffiths, etc. without being able to attach my Daniels to any that appear there, I think I 'm beat.  I don't know if local churches have more info' or if there are good folk in the area willing to do some digging on behalf of the diaspora.  Like many of us overseas, we're at a loss as how to access the limited info' available in the Irish genealogical experience. All I can do is hold my breath and hope for a revelation.

I also looked at the Roots Ireland indexes and did find the 1845 baptismal record for Michael Kilmartin (parents Daniel Kilmartin and Eleanor Carty) in the Drumcliff RC church records. Drumcliff civil parish is just south of Ahamlish civil parish. Both parishes are in the northern part of Co. Sligo.

Like Col, I was unable to find a marriage record for Daniel and Eleanor on Roots.

Roots is a pay site to view their transxriptions of church records and they now require you to purchase a subscription. Sometimes a baptismal record will show the townland where the family lived. Many times the townland is not included.

I also looked at the 1858 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Drumcliff parish and there were a good number of Kilmartins. There were no Daniels listed and I know that the younger Daniel had emigrated and maybe the older Daniel was deceased. Interestingly, there were 9 Leaden entries which I believe corresponds to the maiden name of Catherine Laden. So it looks very likely that your Kilmartins came from Drumcliff parish.

Thanks Col and Roger for your efforts.  It would appear that I am no closer to confirming anything regarding my ancestors, though there's good reason to assume we can surmise the general area they lived in at the time.  Would you concur?

I think there is strong evidence that the Kilmartins came from Drumcliff parish. What confuses me is the Cartys. If Eleanor was born in Roscommon then the distance from the Roscommon border to Drumcliff parish is about 40-50 kilometers a long distance for the 1840s.

Perhaps one scenario is that the Carty family moved towards where my Kilmartins lived? How likely was that for folk in that region at that time?  As Elenora and Daniel reportedly married in Sligo, as opposed to the traditional routine of marrying in the bride's parish (which I assume was also prevelent in Ireland), that's one consideration.   What say you?

That is the likely scenario although probably not too common in that time period. Likely Eleanor's father found a employment opportunity in that area.

I'm not sure if will help at all, but the Gillmartins were named the godparents at some of the Moffitt's baptisms. The parents of the children were Martin Moffitt and Catherina Leonard. Mary Moffitt, baptised August 20, 1827, was sponsored by Luke and Bridget Gillmartin.Thady Moffitt, baptised on July 16, 1837, was sponsored by Patrick Gillmartin.

Hello Jackie.   I am not familiar with any of the names you have indicated.  The only kin I can confirm are Irish born are my ancestor Daniel Kilmartin, his wife Helen Carty and their son Daniel, born in Drumcliff & Magherow, 1845.

Hello Col.  I have considered it, but it looks like a daunting task when I don't know where to begin to look.  I envision many hours of poring through various documents, eyes sore at the end, with no indication that my efforts will bear fruit.   As it is for many of us, time is a factor.  Perhaps when I have a larger reserve of time to devote to the search, I may attempt that task.  Otherwise, I am ever hopeful that one of the companies, such as Ancestry.com will gain access to the records in the next year or two, and have them indexed so that it might make the task easier.  I welcome comments about this approach though.   Neil in Canada

Hi Neil,

I have seen some of your posts on other sites, and I too have been doing some Gilmartin/Kilmartin digging. 

I'm looking for a Mary Downey (born approx 1750-1770 in Grange, Co Sligo) who married a Gilmartin. As per "The History of The Protestant Downeys" written in 1931 by Cairncross Carson Downey (b 1850) there were 4 brothers (Thomas, John, Henry, and James) and one sister, the above mentioned Mary.

In this book it states: 
Mary, their sister, married a Roman Catholic named Gilmartin or Kilmartin, in the neighborhood of Grange. They had a large family, but upon becoming a Romanist she was cut off from her family, who were staunch Protestants, and there is no further record. (as of 1931)

The reason I'm telling you all this is to explain what I'm looking for, but also to tell you that I have been doing a BUNCH of transcribing of the the Ahamlish Parish records (http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0534), written in Latin so I'm sure you can appreciate how much work that is. I have also been compiling lists of Gilmartin's and Kilmartin's from headstones, find a grave, etc etc. Maybe we can chat?
