Kilmartin, Gortnaleck Townland

Ahamlish (Sligo)

I have just determined that my earliest known ancestors were likely from Gorntaleck downland. My great great grandfather Daniel Kilmartin died in Glasgow in 1898 and his death record indicated his parents were Daniel Kilmartin and Catherine Laden of Sligo. Recent findings indicate that a Daniel Kilmartin was recorded in Gortnaleck in 1826-1836. In 1845, my gg grandparents had their first son baptized in the RC church in Drumcliff. They were in Glasgow by 1848. I speculate that the Daniel who went to Glasgow was a son of the Daniel recorded in 1826-1836. I found on those same 1826-1836 records today that there were a few families in the immediate area of my possible Kilmartin ancestor with the surname Lyden. Quite similar eh? Maybe the Daniel who went to Glasgow married a neighbour's daughter. I checked a map, and it appears that, though the townland is in Ahamlish, the lower part would be closer to Drumcliff, and to the church that the child was baptized in 1845 than the 2 churches I could find in Ahamlish, farther to the north. Well. I'm not much further ahead, but thought I'd post it here in case it rung any bells! Neil Kilmartin in Canada

I don't know if this is helpful or not but the subscription site Roots Ireland has a Daniel Kilmartin baptismal record in Ahamlish. Date of baptism February 26 1815. Father Daniel and mother Maria McGawen (likely McGowan). Location was transcribed as Gortnalia which could be Gortnaleck.
