John Craven and Anne Jane Shaw

Hi,

I have been researching John Craven and Anne Jane Shaw's families, but am having trouble because of the replication of names in the family. In particular, there is a John Craven and a John W. Craven, and it would be helpful if I knew which was my great grandfather. I am the granddaughter of Robert James Craven Sr, who left Sligo for New York City, where he stayed with his mom's brother (Shaw).

Also, I was under the impression that there were 4 children of John Craven, (Margaret, Sam, Robert, and Henry). I met Henry two decades ago, and know he died childless. However, Mary Jane Craven also seems to be a child of John (marrying Tom Crean). Initially I thought Mary Jane might be a nickname for Margaret, but I have Margaret A Craven marrying John Irwin in the US. So I'm confused.

I have not been able to locate what happened to Sam Craven.

Does anyone have any information about this family? I would be grateful. Thank you for any information you can share.

Robert's father was John not John W.

1911 census with Anne  http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Sligo/Tobercurry/Tober…;   Hard ro read but it appears that Anne is indicating seven living children which would mesh with the records Patricia provided.

Dear Kieran, Patricia, and Roger,

Thanks so much for this information and clarification! I had taken the 4 children of the earlier census as all of the children, without thinking that older children could have left already. This makes a lot of sense and clears up some persistent questions.

However, John not being John W. means he's not the son of William Craven and Kitty Morrison, and I lack the information on "Just John." Do the baptism records go back to 1831? If possible, I would like to figure out how these neighboring Craven families in Tobercurry connect.  I am guessing William Craven and John's father were brothers, given how the sons seem to be named after the uncles (is this a tradition?).

Thank you so much for helping me. My grandfather died when I was 6, so I never got to ask him anything about Ireland. It was wonderful to visit Tobercurry a couple years ago and learn more about where he came from.

Here is the June 5 1879 marriage record for Anne Jane Shaw and John Creaven.

 Father of John was Richard and Ogham was the townland which I believe it sin Kilturra civil parish not far from the Mayo border. The Shaws were from Cloonarara in Achonry civil parish.

Looks like they were members of the Tubbercurry (St. George's) Church of Ireland parish, As far as I can see records start in 1876 for that parish. See this link  https://www.ireland.anglican.org/cmsfiles/pdf/AboutUs/library/registers…

The naming convention would have the fourth and later sons named after uncles but this was a C of I family and they may not follow the naming conventions that the RC families followed.

Thanks again Roger. This information has been so helpful. We seem to have a lot of Richards around that time (one who stowed away to Canada, but sired a son before leaving), so it's all so confusing. But this has been a huge help!
