Sharkey/Giblin Search Visiting July 14 to August 12

Tibohine (Roscommon)

My name is Thomas Sharkey. I live in Utah. My wife and 3 kids are coming to Ireland next Tuesday and are staying for a month. My great-grandfather was a landholder in a town called "Lisacurka". I think the town is Lisacul. My great-grandfather was John Sharkey, and my great-grandmother was Winfred Sharkey (Giblin). My grandfather was Dominick Sharkey (born 1865 in Lisacurka) and my grandmother was Catherine Sharkey (Giblin). I applied and received my Irish citizenship. Any information you have on Sharkeys in the area would be very helpful I with my brother and my family would like to visit Rosecommon and hopefully visit places where our folks are from and maybe meet some relatives. Thanks for your help.

Thomas,

Real quick...another spelling of the town land is Lissacurkia - even though it is in Dominick's civil birth record. Griffith Valuation records (1857) show John Sharkey & Thomas and Michael Giblin in Lissacurkia.

Regards,

Carolyn

The birth record for Dominick (27th Sept 1865) was registered in Castlereagh/Castlerea Registration District and Frenchpark dispensary district, Co. Roscommon - the place of birth appears to be 'Lisacurka'.

Based onthe district information, townland index & Handran's etc, I believe that this is a reference to the townland more usually noted as 'Lissacurkia' in Tibohine civil parish - the entry on the Placename Database is at this link, shows the location of this townland between the towns of Frenchpark and Ballaghadereen. The entry on the placename database iincludes several spelling variants - based on the original name in Irish : 'Lios a' choirce, 'fort of the oats''

p.s/. take care with the locations - there seems to be a second townland with the same name in Kilcooley civil parish and close to the village of Tulsk

Thomas,

On the paid site, Roots Ireland, there are a number of Sharkey-Giblin marriage unions over a 19 year period. Here are the details, and I will let you put the puzzle pieces together of how they are all related!

John Sharkey & Winifred Giblin, RC parish of Tibohine/Fairymount, 6 Feb 1854, no residences listed, witnesses - Bernard Lavin & Patrick Sharky

John Giblin & Brigid Sharkey, RC parish of Tibohine/Fairymount, 24 Sep 1857, no residences listed, witnesses - Peter Nicholson & Anthony Robinson

Thomas Giblin & Mary Sharky, RC parish of Tibohine/Fairymount, 17 Feb 1862, no residences listed, witnesses - John Giblin & John Sharky

Dominic Sharkey & Mary Giblin, RC parish of Tibohine/Fairymount, 17 Feb 1873, residence for Dominic is Cloonfad, his father is Dominic Sharkey, residence for Mary is Carrowgrave and her father is Thomas, witnesses - Martin Sharkey & Brigid Giblin

Your grandfather Dominick appears to be an only child. Attached is his mother's death record from 1876 that shows she was 57 years old which would make her around 46 when your grandfather was born.

Regards,

Carolyn

Thanks so much, Shane and Carolyn.  The pieces of the puzzle are coming together.
