Looking for Carney Birth/Marriage/Burial Records (also Fallon, Henahan, Donnely, Farrell, Quinn, Murphy...)

Hi all!

I'm visiting Ireland until Friday, August 28th and I'm doing some digging to see if I can learn more about my Carney roots :)

My Grandpa (John "Jack" Carney) and Grandma (Elizabeth Sullivan) were both born in America, but if I going back a little bit before that I've found:

1) My Great, Great Grandpa "Matthew Francis Carney" was born on 6 Jan 1840 in Westmeath and emigrated at some point to the USA (perhaps as a child) because he died 1 Feb 1987 in Massachusetts, USA.

It appears he brought his Father and Mother over as well, because his Father Patrick Carney (born 1799 in Dysertmore, died 26 Mar 1859 in USA) and Mother Bridget Mary Seery aka Bridget Mary Carney (born 1805 in Dublin, died 23 Nov 1870 in USA) both died and were seemingly buried in Massachusetts, USA.

2) My Great Grandma "Elizabeth 'Lilly' Fallon" was born on 16 Nov 1876 in Corboley, Knockcroghery, Roscommon, Ireland and emigrated to the USA (legend has it, as a 10-12 year old, sent by herself to an "Uncle John" who was already in the states...) and then died on 13 Feb 1940 in Brooklyn, NY, USA.

I've got a wealth of information on the Sullivan side, with Fallons, Henahans, Donnellys, and Morans all seemingly coming from Roscommon.

As interested as I am in the Sullivan line - going back to Darby Henahan who was apparently born 1749 in Hill O Berries, Athlone, St. Peters - I'm more interested in learning about the Carney side because a) My Surname is Carney b) That side seems to have a bit more mystery to it.

Specifically, I'd love know more about Matthew Francis Carney (where was he born, where was he baptized, what his parish and church were, etc.) and his Father Patrick Carney (same questions). Ideally, I would find the burial site of Matthew Francis Carney's Grandfather (supposedly a Patrick Carney as well, so his Father Patrick must have been a Jr.?...) so I can pay my respects and learn more about the area that he lived in.

Speaking specifically on the Patrick Carney side, what I have learned is that the elder Patrick (Matthew Francis Carney's Grandfather) was supposedly married to an "Ellen Larkin" who was born in 1780 somewhere in Ireland and died in the USA (it says 27 Nov 1817 in New York on Ancestry.com)

I'm attaching a family tree from Ancestry.com in case that's useful for anyone willing to help :)

Any help would be SO appreciated, and I want to thank you all in advance for any responses!

Sincerely,

Zane

Thank you so much for your responses, Patricia!

The only source for Matthew Francis Carney was born on 6 Jan 1840 in Westmeath, is what was given to me on Ancestry.com! But, perhaps it is inaccurate!

Adding a photo of what it gave me on Ancestry.com, and including my Great Grandpa's info (Edward Michael Carney) as well :)

And thank you so much for the Patrick Carney information! I found that same information too, and yet I haven't been able to find out anything about his Father (supposedly Patrick Carney Sr....) and whether or not he was buried here in Ireland or in the USA...

Tomorrow I'm going to follow up on the "Fallon" line and see if I can visit my Maternal Grandparents side of things in Roscommon :) And then hopefully throughout the journey I'll gain some more information on the Carney side of things! :)

zanecarney

Also, I investigated Matthew Francis Carney a little more, and it appears there's an age discrepancy...my source for his age are the US Census in 1860 and 1880 but their math doesn't line up...do you have any thoughts on how to best reconcile any of this?

Attaching both census' so you can see the confusion first hand!

zanecarney

Doing even more deep diving and found the Naturalization record for Matthew Carney that proves his exact birthdate in what appears to be Westmeath (although it's very hard to read!)

Hopefully this attachment clarifies things! And I noticed on another census (1855 Massachusetts State Census) that his parents Patrick and Bridget were 55 and 45 respectively at the time and it listed Matthew as born in Ireland, but he had other siblings who were born in Mass! Which leads me to believe that Patrick and Bridget came to America WITH Matthew (and other siblings) while Matthew was 10 years old. That's what appears to be the case...

But, it's so darn hard to find anything else out about Patrick Carney and above for some reason...

zanecarney

Zane,

About the age discrepancy in the various records...It is a common problem.  The Irish didn't celebrate birthdays, often were not aware of their birth date. It wasn't on their radar--they were not asked for ID like we are today.  So finding various ages on the censuses is completely normal. Also, Matthew did not necessarily provide the info about himself to the censustaker. Someone in the family or even a neighbor may have given it.

Even the date on the nat papers might be a guess.

glanvil3@aol.com

Any chance you can find Patrick's nat record? If his son was from Westmeath it would be unusual for Patrick to be from Kilkenny (as the findagrave record notes).

glanvil3@aol.com

Thank you for your answers, Patricia!

I just found Patrick Carney's Naturalization Records! Attaching above! It appears he was from "Dysert" (as opposed to "Dysertmore," if there is a difference...) It appears he arrived on 4 May 1851 in the USA...

I'm headed to the Roscommon Library right now because so much of my Maternal Grandma's line (Elizabeth Sullivan) is from that region (Fallon, Henahan, etc.) and a lovely Librarian named Rory is going to help me put together the pieces on that side, as well...

Also, there's a very good chance that my Great, Great, Great, Great Grandfather John Fallon (1797 - 1860) is buried at Cam Old Graveyard just down the road from where I'm staying in Athlone! I'm going to go visit there to see what I can find before I head to the Roscommon Library :)

Even though I'm going to Roscommon to investigate the Fallon line, I'm hopeful that Rory over at that Library can at least point me in the right direction for Patrick Carney...fingers crossed!

Any other resources or libraries you'd recommend to learn more about Patrick Carney?

zanecarney

I found a few other things for Patrick Carney, just to post here before I head to the Library and Cam Old Graveyard

Turns out Patrick Carney was baptized in "Kells, Meath, Ireland" on 16 Jul 1801

In this record, it says his father was "Michael Carney" and his mother was "Elizabeth Hoy" so maybe that's who I should be looking for?...

Ancestry.com auto added Patrick Carney's parents to be Patrick Carney/Ellen Larkin, but the documents above clearly state a different set of parents...

So excited to hear your responses!

zanecarney

Zane,

RootsIreland shows baptisms for five Patrick Carneys in Westmeath, from 1785 to1804. Not sure why you are sold on the 1801 baptism, which is in Meath, not Westmeath?

glanvil3@aol.com

Oh wow! I'm gonna have to do some more digging on RootsIreland!

I'm not sold on that 1801 Baptism, it's just the first one I've been able to find through Ancestry.com is all :) And I'm learning SO much in such a short period - such a fascinating journey, this genealogy work!

And the only reason "Meath" came up is because a few different US records showed Matthew Francis Carney as being from "Meath" rather than "Westmeath."

I also just spoked with Mark Sweeney over at Mullingar Library and he mentioned that there are four distinct "Dysart" regions...so, it appears it may be time to bring in a professional geneologist to get across the finish line with figuring out Matthew Francis Carney's Father and eventually finding that man's Father...

Long story short - I'm gonna do some online work with a genealogist while back in Los Angeles (I fly out tomorrow) and hopefully come back to Ireland within a year or two, armed with near-certainty so I can visit my families plots and graves :)

I so appreciate your care and help, Patricia! And if you have any other ideas or suggestions, I'm all ears :)
