Looking for Genealogy Resources

Morning

There doesn't seem to be any Costellos listed in Griffith's Valuation in Ballinlough in 1855,  see below  : (

http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=doNam…

You could contact the PP in Ballinlough I suppose and ask if the records are computerised and see it he could conduct a search on marriages for Thomas and Bridget  5 years +/- 1885 or any marriages to a Neenan around that time. If they are computerised it wouldn't take long.

MrsDoyle

Thanks Mrs. Doyle.  I will see if I can track down the PP.  Any Ideas?

Below is the parish website.

Probably best to wait til after Easter and once all the Holy Week things are done he may have more time. If they are not computerised you would be better off searching on one of the other sites that do church record searches for a fee or membership as the poor man will be at it til Christmas otherwise!

you could also check roots Ireland and see what you come up with:

www.rootsireland.ie

There is both a church and civil marriage cert on the site for 1886 so it is probably your ancestor as it it the only one for a Costello-Neenah marriage.

Thanks Again Mrs. Doyle.  I will check into these resources.

You can get the reference of this marriage on familyorg.com Your ref is Name Thomas Costelloe. Event - Marriage. Year and Qtr. Jan-Mar 1886 Vol 4 Page 102.

You need to send the above information plus payment details as per their site below. The uncertified copy is 4 euro.

It will give you the name and townland of both fathers.

The census records show the townland as Clogher Upper for this family. There were a few families of Costelloes in this area. It would be advisable to acquire this cert to verify which family your ancestors belong to.

As always please mention the townland if you know it. Ballinlough is at the other end of the parish to Clogher.

Thanks Martin,

I like the idea of using Familysearch.org to find them and then sending away for the cert.  I used http://www.rootsireland.ie/ to find a marriage record, I get the same info but not the actual cert.  It is aways good to have the cert.

At the time of their marriage, Thomas was living in Clougher and Mary in Derrylahan.  Thomas's Father is Bernard Costello, no address given,  Mary's father is John Neenan, also no address given.  Married by Father, John McGreal, Roman Catholic.

I recently obtained a marriage record indicating that John Neenan married Margaret Byrne or Berne, 5 Feb 1863 in Ballinlough RC Parish.  Both were living in Clooninkan.  No parent information recorded.

I am working on a lead that suggests Bernard Costello married a Mary Cormick but I have no other info at the moment.

We are traveling to Ireland in June and I hope to squeeze in a bit of genealogy research.  I am thinking that finding the Parishes they were involved with is my best option to learn more.  Does this sound reasonable?

Thanks again,

Michael

Hi Michael,

Before researching further, I would like to have sight of the cert as you suggest. Unfortunately the Civil certs only commenced in 1864. For some reason I am not aware of a Bernard Costello having been in Clogher. Of course I may well be wrong. I know the Neenans were still in Derrylahan, Cloonfad, Ballyhaunis Co.Mayo in the 1970s - This is the address. D'ont worry I know Derrylahan is in Co. Roscommon, however this is the postal address for the townland. It might be worth dropping a postcard. There is a new 1970s Black Granite headstone on an old Derrylahan Neenan grave in Granlahan Cemetery. It is on the 3rd row in from the RHS of the graveyard 27 plots in from the road. In the same row there are two Clogher Costello plots 21 and 22 in from the road.  22 is for Thomas Costello of Clogher who died Nov. 25 1906 Aged 45 years and of his daughter Delia who died Dec 5 1898 aged 5 years.

June is the perfect month to travel this year as a special effort is being put in for the Gathering. The first weekend in June, Cloonfad is hosting a special weekend and the last weekend in June the Ballinlough committee are doing likewse. I intend to be on hand to give graveyard tours. Also some old school rollbooks will be on display in Cloonfad not to mention other activities. We must be going to have good weather this summer as we are having a very wet spring to date.

Martin Meehan.

Hi Martin,

We will be in Ireland the 1st of Jun and leaving on the 15th. We will be in Kenmare on the 9th and Kilkenny on the 13th.

I was told by James Lyng that Thomas Costello died in 1919 during the Pandemic, however I have a 1911 Census with Mary (Neenan) Costello shown as a widow.  James Lyng was the son of Mary Costello, dau of Thomas.

I show no Delia for this family but she died before the 1901 Census and she would have been born in 1893.  I show a son Michael Costello being born in 1890 and a son John being born in 1894.  All the other children are 2-3 years apart so Delia could easily fit into this family.  So they are worth investigating.

Thank you again,

Michael

The Cloonfad Gathering is on the first weekend in June They will have old school roll books etc on display. Hopefully you can make it to Cloonfad then. A Mr McCormack runs the Post Office Perhaps you could drop him a postcard to see if he can help you with your research. at Cloonfad P.O., Ballyhaunis Co. Mayo.

Martin,

Regarding Bernard Costello,

I have a baptismal record for Thomas Costello listing Bernard Costello and Mary Cormick as his parents.

The only location they give is Parish/District: KILBEGNET/BALLINAKILL.  I would suspect that Bernard or Mary are from this Parish?

I will talk with my wife Tracey about putting Cloonfad on our travels.

Kilbegnet is miles away. Let me know what record you are sure of i.e. An Ellisisland record or whatever and we can then double check where we are leading to.

Martin,

I obtained this record from http://www.rootsireland.ie/

Thanks for staying with me on this.

Michael

Hi Mrs Doyle,

I found Thomas Costello in Upper Clogher in Griffiths using the spelling Costelloe.

Thank you.

Hi Martin,

I have found the Costello Neenan marriage record on rootsireland.ie.  I will send away for the actual cert.  I have attached them here.

There is a very similar record to the Mary Costello you mentioned earlier.

A MAry Costelloe Age 18 and her brother James Age 20 arrived in Ellis Island on  8 Apr 1921 aboard the SS Carmania. Their father was also a Thomas Costello. They travelled to their cousin Mrs Mullally at 144 Duncan Ave. Jersey City N J. Town of origin was Ballinlough on first manifest page and Franlakan on the second page. This obviously should be Granlahan.

The Irish 1911 Census record available at National Archives Irish Census 1901/1911

Townland    Garranlahan Beg

DED              Kiltullagh

Surname     Costelloe

Forename    Mary

Thomas married Mary Ormsby per census details.

These records are very similar to the one you are researching.

Do you know for certain that your Thomas Costello's father was Bernard. If so I would be follow that route as I am not aware of their having been a Bernard in Kiltullagh parish.

I have attached the immigration record I have for Mary Costello.  It lists both Ballinlough and Clougher as addresses.  Father Thomas Costello. Visiting sister (Margaret) Mrs. Lyndon.  Which I have verified as her sister's married name from her nephew.  I also have her naturization record.

I do need her marriage record for her parents info but I had secondary info which gave me Thomas.  I presumed that the 1901 and 1911 Census records (attached) I found in Upper Clougher are correct based on the names Thomas, Mary and Margaret and their ages and location.  I believe I had a couple of other sibling names from James Lyng, Mary's son.

The Marriage records of Thomas gave me the name Bernard.  I should really get Mary's marriage record to show her mother as Neenan to soldify the Neenan-Costello marriage and thus solidfying the Thomas I have been working on.

I have been trying to do as much as I can from Colorado as I will have limited Genealogy time when I get to Ireland.  Tracey and my daugher Megan are not as interested and have little patience for wandering court houses, churches, libraries etc....Sigh!!

They love to hear my stories though!

You have done your research well. The only additional certificate I would like to see is Mary's Birth Certificate to cross check the date on her naturalisation certificate. By the way as soon as I saw the picture I saw a distinct resemblance to Mrs Costello who lives in Mountdelvin a townland also in Kiltullagh parish. I have my granduncles original cert but his one did not have a picture on it.

John Neenan's wife in Derrylahan was Margaret Byrne. Bernard Costello is the correct name. The first child was called after him as was tradition.

Clogher Upper is very close to Co Galway. There was an old church in Kiltivna. This church was closer than Cloonfad to Clogher Upper. I suspect you might find records for Bernard in Dunmore Parish. This may explain why there were no records going back for a Bernard in Kiltullagh Parish.

I have a contact who lives in Clogher and is very interested in Genealogy and History. I could arrange for you to meet up when you come to Ireland.

Hi Martin,

You reminded me that I have Mary's Birth Cert.  I recieved it about a month ago but I forgot to scan it.  I just did but unfortunately it is too big to attach, I need to figure out how to reduce the file size.  But it confirms her birth date and parents Costello and Neenan.  I forgot about that.  It also lists her father's profession as a Landholder so I presume the info I found on Griffith's is the correct one as well.

Yes, I would like to try and meet your contact.  We are on a whirlwind tour but we can try.

Things seem to be ticking along rather nicely for you. Let me know if you need any further help. I'm not far from Cloonfad either, so if you don't manage to make the trip in June I can send you photos of graves should you need/want that kind of thing!

Happy hunting
