Dear Martin and Roger,
Once again thank-you for your help.
Martin,
I surely do know these families.
Firstly, Patrick and Delia Flanagan were my maternal grandparents and Terence (my mother’s brother) was my uncle. Terence had a twin brother Patrick who died in infancy c.1927, but I don’t know where he is buried. Two more brothers, John (d.2012) and Fr. Bill (d.2013) are also buried in the family plot. The last time I was in Ballinlough was to take my mother to see the grave in 2015. We also visited the family farm in Clooninsla, now owned by Maureen McDermott. Most of the rest of the Flynns emigrated to the US.
Elizabeth Knight was Delia’s younger sister, so my great aunt. The rest of the family are living near Crawley in Sussex. Thank you for sending this through, these dates are new to me.
Roger,
Having spent many years researching my Flanagans and Flynns, I am now looking at my mother’s other grandparents – the Duffys and the Waldrons, who were less well known to us.
Most of my Flanagan / Flynn research was based on notes taken by my uncles (John and Fr. Bill, who was a priest in the US for 40 years) of conversations with my grandfather and great aunt in the US. Earlier this lyear, I commissioned some research on the Flanagans from the Heritage centre in Strokestown – and it turned out that the notes were completely accurate, including details of townlands where everyone was born back 2-3 generations. What they couldn’t remember, of course were dates. These were provided by Strokestown.
In what follows, I am hoping that I may be able to return some of the favours you have done me in the past!
On Ancestry, I was matched with Peggy Cesark a cousin in the US, through my Duffy line and we managed to find the connection. Her Ancestry account name is megin4u.
She has a public tree on Ancestry at - https://www.ancestry.co.uk/family-tree/tree/50517128/family
Which you should be able to view.
On Family Tree DNA , I have also been matched with Patricia Meehan-Smyth as a 2-4th Cousin. She is researching Duffys and wrote back to me –
…..I have Duffys and Costellos from Derrylahan, but it is Derrylahan in Urlaur (Parish of Kilmovee) in Co Mayo. Do you know of any ancestors from Kilmovee? Most of mine came from there and a few from Lisacul just over the border in Roscommon.
She might be a little hard to find on FTDNA, as she uses initials to identify herself (see attached file).
My link to the Duffys is via Mary-Ann Duffy, my g-g-grandmother born in Derrylahan in 1872. However, I got a surprise when Patricia mentioned a second Derrylahan in Mayo, albeit closeby. My knowledge of local geography is not that great!
I hope that some of this may be of use to you.
Warmest Regards to both,
Bill
