Griffin Family

RoscommonKilkeevin (Roscommon)

Can anybody help? One of my ancestors was a William Griffin who I believe was from Kilkeevin and was a Sergeant in the 95 Regiment of Foot serving in the Peninsular 1808-15.

William was discharged in 1815 aged 42. He was the father of my Great Great Grandmother Anne Joachim Griffin who was born in Spain in 1818 and is known to have been living in Liverpool in 1845.

Anybody who has researched the Griffins of Kilkeevincan hopefully shed some light on this.

Any information would be very much appreciated?

Ian:

The RC catholic church records for Kilkeevin parish (Castlerea) go back further than most parishes in Co. Roscommon but they only go back to 1804 too late for William.

No Griffin records in the Tithe listings for Kilkeevin parish.

The 1855 Griffiths head of household listing for Kilkeevin parish lists an Owen Griffin in Cloonlatieve townland. Not sure if there is any connection back to William.

There were two 1901 census records in Cloonlatieve with griffin families. The head of households were possibly sons of Owen Griffin from the Griffiths.

Thank you for replying so quickly.

I've been so spoilt over the years with access to parish records going back to the 17th century the fact that the Kilkeevin records only go back to 1804 is a real disappointment, but I suppose it just makes the search a little more challenging.

I still have a few lines to follow in the UK but I'll also check to see if Clooniatieve provides any tangible leads, thank you for this.
