Family of Bridget Josephine Egan

Kilglass (Roscommon)

I'm looking for relatives of my maternal grandmother, Bridget Josephine Egan (DOB Mar. 1901), baptized at Kilglass Parish Church. She had 4 siblings, all girls: Mary Ellen, Maggie (McKenna), Tess (Casey) and Kathleen (Steele). Her parents are Thomas Egan and Bridget Duffy, who married at the Church of St. Mary in Carniska around 1900.

I believe the family lived in Cloonfad.

I'm visiting IRE in March/April 2026 and would love to connect with some of my relatives while there.

Thank you for any info. you can share.

Based on a few searches, it appears that the father was James Egan not Thomas Egan. James Egan married Bridget Duffy February 11 1892 in Strokestown RC church. Mary Ellen was baptized in January 1896 Margaret 1897 Anne Teresa 1898 Catherine 1899 and Bridget Josephine 1901. The family lived in Cloonfad townland in Termonbarry civil parish.

Teresa married James Casey in 1922. I don't see a marriage record for the other three sisters. Did they emigrate?

We have a Meet and Greet form which you can submit once you finalize your travel plans.

Roger and Eileen, thank you so much for your replies and the information you shared. I’m grateful for your help.

My mistake – James Egan was the husband of Bridget Duffy.

As soon as my travel plans are finalized, I will complete the meet and greet form.

Question – how can I find out the name/location of the cemetery where James Egan and his daughter Mary Ellen are buried? I’m not sure if any other family members are buried there.

I don’t know if any of the family stayed in Roscommon.

Thanks again for your help.

Monica:

There are a number of cemeteries/graveyards in the general area. It is very possible that there is no headstone for James and Mary Ellen. Apparently there is no graveyard associated with Carniska RC church. You may want to contact the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Strokestown to see if they have a record of the burial location.

I searched for a death record for Maggie Egan since she is listed as the death informant for James Egan but did not locate a record. We only have access to death information through 1974. It is possible she died in Ireland after 1974.

The 1926 census is coming out in three months so I would search for Maggie Egan in Cloonfad to see if she was still there.

Margaret married William McKenna 1929, see cert above. William died in 1966, the address Briskill , Newtownforbes, Co Longford is on the marriage cert.

Thank you again, Roger and Eileen.

I learned that some of the family, including James, Bridget and I think Tess are buried at the cemetery in Kilbarry.

I thought I had lost the record from a while back, but found a link that a genealogist shared with me and my sisters from the website historicgraves.com.

I’m hopeful to connect with relatives who are still in Ireland.

Do you have any suggestions for other community message boards I should join?

Thank you!

Monica:

That is great news! I had checked on findagrave.com but did not search historicgraves.com

You could search Facebook using Tarmonbarry (not Termonbarry) and you will find a few local Facebook pages. Any relatives will likely be Caseys or possibly a Casey daughter married.

Thanks, Roger!
