Cregg family - Carkfree & Granny (Estersnow) → Ballymore East (Boyle)
Hello, and thank you for this community.
I'm a descendant of the Cregg family and I'm hoping someone with local knowledge of the Croghan / Estersnow and Boyle area might help me get back one more generation.
What the records tell me so far:
- By 1858, two brothers — Patrick and Thady (Thaddeus) Cregg — were farming adjacent holdings at Ballymore East (or Corbally), near Boyle (Griffith's Valuation; landlord Andrew Irwin). Patrick is my direct ancestor.
- The family always said they came "from the Croghan direction," and the records agree: Griffith's 1858 shows an Edward Cregg at Carkfree and a Thaddeus Cregg at Granny, both in Estersnow parish.
- The family remember the patriarch — Patrick & Thady's father — as either "Edmund" or "Thaddeus," married to a Catherine (possibly a Hannon) who is said to have died around 1867. They are buried at Killaraght.
What I'm trying to do:
- Work out which of the Estersnow Creggs (the Edward at Carkfree, or the Thaddeus at Granny) was Patrick & Thady's father — and then reach his parents, the Cregg family of Carkfree/Granny in the late 1700s/early 1800s.
So I'd love to hear from anyone who:
- has local knowledge of the Cregg families of Carkfree or Granny, Estersnow;
- knows of two Cregg brothers moving from that area to Ballymore (Boyle) around the 1850s;
- has old photographs, Killaraght (or Estersnow/Croghan) gravestone details, or a family connection to these Creggs.
I'm very happy to share everything I've gathered in return — any pointer at all would be a great help.
With thanks,
Daniel Cregg
