BALLINDOLLAGHAN VESEYS

RoscommonBaslick (Roscommon)

I will be in Roscrea on 27, 28 and 29 March 2023 to research my family history. My paternal grandfather Patrick Joseph Vesey (1874-1947) was born and brought up in Ballindollaghan, which I believe is in the parish of Baslick. My paternal grandmother was Margaret Miriam O'Keefe (1878-1946). She was born and brought up in Boyle. Patrick and Margaret met and married in Manchester in about 1903. They had five children, of whom my father, John Vesey, was one. They also both died and are buried in Manchester (Moston Cemetery). If anyone can give me any information or advise me where to find information, I'll be most grateful.

Here are the birth and baptism records for Patrick Vasey.  Note he was born 25 Dec., according to his baptismal record.  But when the birth was registered on 20 Jan., the informant gave his birthday as 1 Jan.  This is likely because the birth was being registered a bit late and the informant did not want to pay a fine.

Thank you very much Patricia and Roger for the information about my grandfather, Patrick Vasey, especially for the baptismal certificate. I was delighted to see it. However, I'm a bit confused about the marriage certificate. According to his birth and baptismal certificates, his father was John Vasey, but on the marriage certificate it gives the father/groom as Patrick Vesey (Vesey not Vasey). Could you please explain?

Eugene Vesey

So sorry. I meant to say Castlerea not Roscrea.

Eugene:

There were many variant spellings of names in the 19th century. For your surname Vesey is by far the most common spelling but for some reason Patrick's birth and baptismal records show Vasey.

Thank you Roger.

On Patrick Vasey's birth cert above his parents are named as John Vasey and Mary Rabbit.

On Patrick Vasey's baptism cert above his parents are named as John Vasey and Mary Rabbit.

However, on his parents' marriage cert above his parents are named as Patrick Vesey and Mary Rabbit.

I understand the surname variation Vasey/Vesey but I'm puzzled about the change from John to Patrick.

Can you help?

Thanks.

Eugene:

I figured out the problem. The 1871 civil record I sent you is not the correct record. I located a church marriage record February 15 1870 ( a year earlier than the other record) in Tulsk RC church between a John Vesey and a Mary Rabbit. The church record showed that John was from Ballindollaghan and his father was John Vesey. Mary Rabbit was from Baslick and her father was Eugene Rabbit not the Martin Rabbit shown on the 1871 marriage record. Sorry for the confusion.

I was not able to locate the civil record for the 1870 marriage.

Thank you Roger. That solves the puzzle - though it surprises me that there seem to have been two Mary Rabbits getting married around the same time in the same general area. And both to men from Ballindollaghan! I shall have a search for the civil record for the 1870 marriage certificate, though I suppose if you couldn't find it, I won't be able to either. (I'm using mainly findmypast.co.uk for my searches.) Would you be able to send me a copy of the 1870 church marriage certificate or advise me where to find one? Finally, it seems strange to me that a couple from Ballindollaghan and Baslick would marry in Tulsk, which according to google maps is about seven miles away - an even more considerable distance for the 1870s than today I suppose. I would have expected them to marry in one of their local parish churches. Could you perhaps elucidate on that? Thank you again for your help.

Eugene:

Another surprise. I went to the parish register for Kilmurry/Tulsk parish and did not find the marriage record in February 1870 as indicated by Roots Ireland. I eventually determined that the marriage occurred on February 16 1873 in Kilmurry/Tulsk church. Below is the link to the parish register entry and the civil marriage record which shows Owen for the father and I'm sure you know that Owen is an alternate for Eugene. So Roots Ireland had the wrong year for the church record.

See second record January 1873 marriage  https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1873/11265/8208128.pdf

There were two parishes in the area: Ogulla/Baslick and Tulsk/Kilmurry. I would have though that the marriage would be in Ogulla/Baslick but for some reason they married in Tulsk/Kilmurry, Maybe the priest had other marriages in Tulsk/Kilmurry and asked John and Mary to come to that church. I do know that marriages were not generally held in Lent and the couple wanted to get married so off to Tulsk/Kilmurry.

Thank you very much Roger. I notice that on the church marriage certificate the father of Joannis Vesey (my grandfather) is named as Joannis Vasey. (It seems odd to find two different spellings on the same document!) Would you be able to find out anything more about Joannis Vasey, who I presume was my great-grandfather?

I have found a death certificate for a John Veasy of Ballindollaghan who died on 24.1.1885. I'll attach it below. I wonder if this could be the Joannis Vasey referred to in the above marriage certificate? If not, who?

Thank you for your help. It's invaluable, since I'm a complete novice at this ...

Sorry. I suppose Joannis Vesey was my great-grandfather and Joannis Vasey was my great-great grandfather. My head is whirling!

Eugene:

I'm confused. If you enter the link above and then sign-in to irishgenealogy.ie  you will get a page of marriage records and the Vesey/Rabbit marriage is the second record.

Sorry Roger. It's me being confused again. The doc I'm referring to is from another source. Thanks anyway.
