McDermott family of Roscommon and Boston, Massachusetts

Athleague (Roscommon)

I had breakthrough with my 2x great grandmother, Jane McDermott (1839-1871) who married John Cunniff in Roxbury, Massachusetts on 2 Feb 1862. We’d known very little about her because her death record only stated that she came from Ireland and her parents were Patrick and Mary. She and John Cunniff (1837-1902) who was born in Elphin Diocese - Glinsk Parish on the Roscommon/Galway border, settled in Cambridge, and had 3 children together. Only one of the children lived into adulthood and married and I and my siblings are their descendants.

For all I knew, Jane was an orphan with no siblings, only her husband and her

children and her in laws. But lo and behold, I have found that Jane had at least 2 siblings, and possibly 4,

who also immigrated to Boston and settled in the area. I “discovered” them when researching the witnesses to John and Jane’s marriage and their children’s baptisms. She and John were god-parents to at least 2 nieces/nephews and had witnessed the second wedding of her brother John McDermott.

According to his citizenship paperwork, John McDermott (1839-1885) was born in County Galway. He married a young Irish lass, Catherine Rock, who died in during the birth of their daughter, Catherine Cecelia McDermott. John married a second time, Mary E Callahan, from Nova Scotia, and they had several children more.

Cecelia “Celia” McDermott (1834-1876) married James McLaughlin in 1855 in Cambridge and the couple raised their family there. They had three children but only one lived into adulthood and married. Similar to Jane, Celia’s parents were listed as Patrick and Mary on her death record. I found a baptism record for her in Elphin diocese -

Athleague Parish for the 7th of March 1829. The witnesses were Michael Gallagher and Bridget H**ly.

Michael McDermott, according to his citizenship application, came from Roscommon. I have made an assumption that he is also a sibling due to the close ties between the families. Like John, they all sponsored each other’s children’s baptisms and witnessed their marriages. Michael married Margaret Fahey and that

also had a brood of children. I have requested his death certificate and am hoping that the record shows not only the names of his parents, but that it includes the maiden name of his mother.

Finally, Bridget McDermott (1818-187?) married Patrick Gallagher in Lowell in 1849. This one is a bit of a stretch, but I include it here as there are interesting connections with the other McDermott siblings. One item of interest is that three McDermott families (John, Michael and Bridget) shared the same dwelling in the 1865 Census in Boston. (Jane and John Cunniff and Celia and James McLaughlin were living in Cambridge at that time.) I may be mistaken, but I think this suggests a more than casual relationship between the families.

There is an August 10 1826.marriage between a Patrick McDermott and a Mary Galagher at Athleague RC church. Good possibility this marriage is for your ancestors.

Celia was baptized March 7 1828. There is a gap in Athleague baptismal records from May 1828-August 1834. Possibly Jane and others were baptized in the gap period.  https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0537?locale=en
