Searching for a death record for my Catholic great- granduncle, Joseph Finn

Offaly

My second great-grandfather, James Finn, (born 1837 in Leitrim, County Kings (Offaly), Ireland

Death 2 DEC 1877 • Leitrim, Edenderry, County Kings (Offaly), Ireland) was married to Mary Kinahan/Kenahan/Keenahan/Kenehan (born 1830, died 1907 in Leitrim, Edenderry, County Offaly/Kings). They had four children: my great grandfather, James, who emigrated to Missouri, USA; another son, John (born AUG 1866 • Leitrim, Edenderry, Offaly, Ireland died 16 JUL 1946 • Ballykillen, Edenderry, County Offaly, Ireland); a daughter, Mary Anne (born JUL 1868 • Leitrim, County Kings, Ireland died 5 FEB 1945 • Ballykillen, Edenderry, County Offaly, Ireland); and the youngest, Joseph (Birth MAR 1874 • Leitrim, County Kings, Ireland, died??).

I know from various records that all three siblings were unmarried and lived together their entire lives. Joseph is listed as the informant on Mary Anne and John's death records. John died in 1946, when Joseph was 72 years old. The family were Roman Catholics. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

We have online access to death records through 1974. The records for 1975 should be added in the next few months. It is possible but unlikely that Joseph died after 1974 so his record is not yet online. More than likely, his death was not recorded. I looked at all "Joseph" civil death records for 1945-1974 and did not see a good lead.

You may want to contact St. Mary's church in Edenderry to see if they can help you. https://www.edenderryparish.ie/

Roger,

Thanks so much for your response. What is the etiquette for directly contacting a church, please? Is there a fee involved for researching?

I would email the parish office (address at bottom of web site). If they respond, let them explain what they can do and if they charge a fee.

Meadows,

Is it possibIe Joseph emigrated to another country? If you don't find his death record in IreIand, that might be why.

Patricia,

Thanks for your response. I don't think he would have immigrated at age 72, and also because he was the very last living Finn ancestor in the home country. He, John and MaryAnne were real homebodies; they lived their whole lives together in the same house: first with their parents, then when their father passed they remained with their mother until she died. All three never married. When their mom died, they left their childhood home in Leitrim and moved as a family unit to Ballykillen. I suspect Joseph died somewhere in Offaly or some other nearby county, all by himself. Sad, there was no one left to mourn him.

I noticed in the 1901 Census this.............

National Archives: Census of Ireland 1911

I looked for this John aged 11 for his birth

1908110.pdf

his father James was in America and his mother was Ann Cully.

In April this year the 1925 or 26 Census is to be released you may get more info then.
