Michael Cantwell

Offaly

I am new to this site, so please bare with. I recently jumped in with two feet to researching our Family genealogy. My father got and Ancestry account and I have been really making progress. I have hit roadblocks with my wife's family. Her Father's side is entirely Irish. What I have is based on Ancestry.com records and others family trees. I have attached two trees of her Grandpa James Cantwell and her Grandma Irene Callaghan. James', father was Michael, I am not 100% on any of this, so if you think something might be wrong, please let me know.

It appears that you want this for one individual at a time, so I will start with Michael Cantwell. I do need information/verfication for the entire portion of the family tree from Ireland. Should I make a post for each name? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Sam,

The trees you posted show that someone put a lot of time and effort into compiling them. But do we know if they are accurate? If the compiler did not post proof of the trees' information--say, birth, baptismal, marriage, death records for the individuals--then we can't really trust them. So if the information has been proved, we can trust it. If not, we can't.

Fair enough. I will go back and figure out what information I have on each individual and post their name and known facts and the source. In most cases I have either marriage records, or census data, just hoping that someone will realize that they are related to my wife and provide additional information as it is hard to research from the States. Thanks.

Sam,

I am in the U.S. too. Almost all my Irish research has been done here.

There are many databases you can use to research Irish ancestors. Free ones include irishgenealogy.ie (includes civil birth/death/marriages plus church records for Dublin/Cork/Kerry); the 1901 and 1911 censuses; Griffith's Valuation at askaboutireland; the tithe applotments; Irish wills; and more. An excellent paid database, one you can join for a day or a week or longer, is rootsireland.ie. It has church baptism/marriage records, Griffith's, censuses, and more.

Good luck.

Thank you for the response Patricia. I will try to check those out.

Hello Sam

Hope you don't mind me jumping in here and I might comment on what Patricia correctly said.

I have looked at the trees you posted and some of the 'flow' of the family lines does not add up, e.g Edward J and Bridget do you have a marriage record for them - I would start with them as you can go back and forward from them. I see Edward died in Tulllamore, Co Offaly and Bridget died in Urlingford, Co Kilkenny, even though they died the same year - 1876. (now I know that is possible but in 1876 these towns are a long way apart)

If you could get Bridget and Edwards Marriage cert/record. Have you any idea where Bridget was from in Ireland.

The other thing that I was looking at is Matthew Cantwell - he died in Parsonstown, Ireland. Parsonstown is now called Birr, which is in County Offaly but Edward was born in Kilkenny.

On Michael and Margaret Feehans marriage cert does it say where in Ireland either of them are from.

Yes, I found both Bridget and Edwards death certificates but could not find a marriage cert..  See attached.

Sorry now for putting you over this again Sam.

So Edward was a Shopkeeper in Tullamore, Co Offaly when in died December 1876 and it says on his death registration that he is married at that time.

Bridget died in August 1876 it says she is a Widow at that stage even though Edward died after her. John Hanlon was present at her death in Lodge, Kilkenny, was he related to her do you know Sam
