James Rigney

Offaly

Hi Everyone,
I would love to find out about my great great great grandfather James Rigney 1803-1863 and anyone before that! He married catherine l'Estrange 1812-1851 of French Huguenot decent in County Offaly. And had such a great time in Ireland riding my bike up the coast from Cork I had been looking for a job in London and it was just so great to get to Ireland where everyone was so very nice and helpful. I slept in farmers fields and forests with my tent it was awesome. Love to come back soon.
Best Regards Alistair

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Roots Ireland had a transcription of the 1831 marriage in the Banagher RC parish. The Banagher baptismal records start in 1811 so if James was baptized in that parish, a record would not be available. I did see a transcription of Catherine's baptismal record in 1812 in

Griffiths' Valuation has 8 results for the name James Rigney in Offaly. One was Boolakeel townland in Reynagh civil parish. Other townlands were Ballyclare, Balyvora and Moyclare, all in Wheery (?) parish. Also Lehinch and Lissanisky townlands in Kilbride parish; Glendine in Kinnity; and Esker in Lemanaghan civil parish. Do any of these names ring a bell?  Boolakeel townland was small, only 173 acres. The date of Griffiths' Valuation for these places was 1854.

Might James have come from a neaby parish to  marry Catherine?

I've looked at a map to accompany Griffiths Valuation. Boolakeel township looks to be not far from the town of Bannagher.

Hi Alistair,
Your very welcome to 'Ireland XO', I'm a volunteer here on 'Ireland XO ' and because I joined the 'Shinrone Parish I got an email regarding yourself. A Thomas Rigney born in 1831 and died on the 30th December 1906 was my 3rd Great Uncle by marriage as he was married to my 3rd Great Aunt Mary Anne Broder , we say Bruder but it was spelt different ways depending on who was doing the writing. She was born in 1856 and died in 1918. They married on the 8th August 1867 in Banagher (Parsonstown District, that's Birr) in Kings County which is now County Offaly. Thomas's father was also called Thomas Rigney. I have all their children's names 13/14 kids. The Father Thomas was probably your 3 times great grand-uncle.Let me know if you want more info or access to the family tree.
Regards,
John Abbott-Kelly.

Hello John

I was just reading your message and see you have the name Broder/Bruder in your family tree.

My great grandmother was Marie Broder from Lemanaghan, Co Offaly born c1857.  It just I never see people with the name Broder/Bruder/Brooder, too ofter.

With regard to Rigneys there are lots of Rigneys living in Rahan, Co Offaly

Geraldine we have to be related , Bruder is not a common name. There's a niche of them around the Roscrea/Borrisokane (North Tipperary) area and into Birr(Offaly) .They have to be the same family. Margaret Bruder was my Great -Great Grandmother she lived at Shannon harbour at the time , her father was Michael Bruder (1805-1872) from Birr, Co. Offaly and his father was John Bruder no dates yet probably from Birr as well. Geraldine can you fill in any blanks for me on the Bruder side, please. My tree is on 'Ancestry.Kelly/Abbott Tree.

John Abbott-Kelly.

I am not really sure how all this works but you have a go.  My mother should not come up as a match as she is not on the Border side

Thanks
