Cassins and Mearas (Cashin/Cashen-Mara) possibly in Shinrone

OffalyShinrone (Offaly)

My great-grandmother Bridget Cassin was born in 1843 maybe.  Dates and ages seem to be fluid when reviewing old records. I know she was married at least twice - once to Jeremiah Cahill and once to Jeremiah Finn. I have tried for years now, but have been unable to locate marriage records for either.  It is entirely possible she was wed before that too.  She gave birth to her first son (I am aware of) with Jeremiah Cahill in June 1874, in Elizabeth, NJ. Around 1878 she gave birth to James Cahill. I Can find no record of this, but should also be in Elizbeth, NJ.  I don’t know what happened to Jeremiah Cahill although I have again searched for records for many years. In 183, she gave birth to Mary Ellen Finn in 1883. I have record of that birth and baptism – according to the records she was 38 at the time. She then gave birth to David Jermiah Finn (my grandfather) in 1887 – again I have records, ad according to the records she was 39 – 4 years after she was 38. In the 1900 census she is listed as 40 – 13 years after she was 39. When she died in 1914, her age is listed as 57 and her date of birth listed as Feb 2, 1857. I recount all of this to indicate these records put her birth between 1845 and 1860.

I know from various records that Bridget had a sister named Ellen. Various records give drastically different ages for her too. In the probate for Ellen’s last will and testament, I discovered Bridget had two brothers – Patrick and Hugh living in England. At least that were still alive when she passed away. After endless searched for one of  Bridget’s marriage records I decided to search for Ellen’s and found it.  Ellen was married in 1866 in NYC to James Delaney. Her parents were listed as Patrick Cassin and Margaret Meara. Before that record, I was going off of Bridget’s death certificate that said her parent’s names were Jeremiah Cassin and Bridget Cassin (maiden name not listed). However, Ellen would have known her parent’s names when she got married. Whoever gave the names of Bridget’s parents when she died, probably didn’t know their names.

From there I decided to search for more info on Ellen’s husband James Delaney. The record listed his parents as Michael Delaney and Mary Carrol. That search gave me a hit in the NLI for what I thought was James Delaney, but it wasn’t, it was another Deaney child to Michael Delaney and Manry Carrol. That child was born in Shinrone, Ireland. However, before I found the Delaney child, on the left side of the two pages scanned, the first name I found was William Cassin, son of Patrick Cassin and Margaret Meara. This was too much of a coincidence that a Cassin with the same parents was born in the same town as the Delaney child with the same parent names. So I took this to mean I had stumbled upon the town they came from.  I searched page by page and found multiple children for Pat Cassin and Margaret Meara, including a Bridget – born in February, but 1843, not 1857.  I never found Ellen, but the records start in 1843 and everything indicated Ellen was the older sister. In addition to Bridget, I found a Mary, Margaret, William, Patrick and John. I never found a Hugh in Shinrone, but I suspect maybe John was John Hugh and went by Hugh. I have found 3 brothers, Patrick, William and Hugh Cassin who lived in Manchester, who’s ages work for Patrick, Willaim and John. Additionally, the 1901 census says they were from Kings County – which is now County Offaly.

I do not know when Bridget arrived in the US because the ship records from Ireland do not give much information. I know she was there by 1874. There are potential census records in NYC in 1870 that could be her. Her sister was married in NYC in 1866. It stands to reason that they came to America together.

Final thing is, I found a marriage record from 1839 for Patrick Cashin and Margaret Mara in Drumnamahane, which is near Borrisokane. In County Tipperary, but very close to Shinrone – less than 20 miles.

I have used NLI, Roots Ireland, IrishGenealogy.ie. My questions are – did I find the right Cassins and Mearas in Shinrone? How can I prove it? Are there more baptism records for Shinrone from before 1843? If I can find Ellen that would go a long way towards convincing me.  How can I find records of when they emigrated to America or moved to England? Does anybody have ancestral connections to Cassins or Mearas in Shinrone who might know more info?

Sorry your message was cutoff in part.

Shinrone baptismal and marriage record start in early 1842  https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0760?locale=en

The subscription site Roots Ireland shows a February 13 1843 baptism in Shinrone for a Bridget Cashen with parents Patt Cashen and Margaret Meara. There was also a sister Mary in 1844 and another sister Margaret in 1845.

Any possibility that this is your family?

Hello Roger,

First of all, thank you for such a rapid response.  It is very appreciated. You are correct, the records do start in early 1842, I forgot. But since Bridget was born in Feb 1843, that leaves only Jan-April as possible (but unrealistic) months for Ellen's birth, so I think 1840 or 1841 is more realistic. That would also lend some more credibility to the 1839 marriage record I found for Patrick Cashin and Margaret Mara being the correct parents. I think this is my family, but I am struggling to find those little pieces of information that could confirm it, like Ellen's baptism record or Hugh's.  If it is the right family, it would be Bridget, Mary, Margaret, William, Patrick and John from the records I have located.  Ellen would be the oldest (possibly).

I feel like if I could find either of Bridget's marriage records, it could help (assuming it had her parent's names), if it had an actual birth location, that would be incredible.  I have also been hoping to find DNA matches to the area, but so far inconclusive. Or if I could find Ellen and Bridget on a passenger manifest together. One of the best clues I ever found (also on my paternal side) was a census record that said more than just "Ireland" or "Germany" - which most do, but the 1920 census for the sibling of the wife of David Jeremiah, said her parents were born in Coblenz, Germany and Nassau, Germany. Very specific, which led to great finds. Unfortunately, both Ellen and Bridget had passed away by 1920 - when the records seem more detailed.

Also thank you for pointing out my message got cut off.  Below is the full statement that was truncated:

"If I can find Ellen that would go a long way towards convincing me.  How can I find records of when they emigrated to America or moved to England? Does anybody have ancestral connections to Cassins or Mearas in Shinrone who might know more info?"

Just to add more confusion to the crazy dates: The 1900 census says Bridget's year of immigration was 1880.  The 1910 census says year of immigration 1878.  However, I have birth records for her son Michael Cahill in 1874 and I suspect James Cahill was born in 1878. Both in Elizabeth, NJ.  :|

finn-cassin-meara:

All three baptismal records for Bridget, Mary and Margaret show Shinrone so I assume the family lived in the village of Shinrone.
