Cooke - Crinkill

Hi there, 

I am hoping that you could help me try and locate members of my father's family which I believe came from Crinkill.

All that I have in terms of certain knowledge is that my grandfather is called Brendan Cooke, and that he had a son called Thomas John Cooke (Buckley). I believe that Brendan was born in the 1930s, and that he went onto marry Ann.

I am seeking information to add my own studies into my heritage and background, and if this interest were to connect me to family that would be an added bonus.

We are very limited in what information we can provide. First, we do not look for records for people who are living and even if your grandfather is deceased, civil birth records are only available online up to 1919 because of the Irish government's 100 year rule on publishing birth information due to privacy concerns.

Finally, the 1911 census (which is available online) for Crinkill does not show any Cooke families.

Hi Roger,

I have also been looking at Birr too and have found Cooke mentioned in the 1911 census, so I will be working with those details, mindful of the 100y rule. Are you familiar with Birr, did then have schools? Or was it that they didnt and needed to travel to Crinkill. Sorry I am not familiar with the area!

My intention is not to break any GDPR, but to gather a sense that I am heading in the correct direction. I have one interesting Cooke family entry that I am looking at currently. Its John Cooke, Barrack Street. John is noted as married but there is no wife. He is said to be from England and has travelled with the army, as he has children born in India.

I have found another too, but I have found the census websites tricky, if you have any tips that would be greatly appreciated.

Are you sure that the Cooke's in Birr are your relations?
Going by the1901  England Census this John.... the father was born (1862) in Nottingham and at that time they were living in Alverstoke.
Are they your family?

The 1901 and 1911 censuses are tricky. They don't allow any spelling variations so if you input Cooke and the person was transcribed as Cook, you won't get the record.  Frequently townlands are misspelled which can cause to miss records. Another issues is that they are not indexed by civil parish but rather by District Electoral Division (DED) which is information that most peole have.

Hello Lucy
To answer your query regarding schools. There has been a National School in Crinkle since the 1930s where children would have gone to school. The present school was built in 1958. They would then go into Birr for their Second level education.

Hi Lucy, My family is from Crinkill. I know the family moved there in the 1870s. Brendan and my Great-grandfather were brothers. Please send me a message if you want more info. Thanks
