At Gallen and Reynagh Catholic Parish Offlay.
Thanks again.
Nick
Helo Nick, I have just found this site and saw your message. I am descended from Patrick Cannon who I believe is your Thomas Cannons brother. I have a DNA match on Ancestry to a descendant of Thomas & Margaret's son William Cannon, known in Australia as William Cunnane/Cannon the elder, who settled in Victoria and who was transported to Australia in 1835 with his cousin William Cunnane/Cannon who is my Great Great Grandfather.
Both William's were convicted as White Boys, in Tipperary for Firearms & sentenced to Life. They arrived on the ship Backwell on 29th September 1835 which left Cork on 12th June 1835. Native place is Kings County (County Offlay). My William's Occupation was a Farm Servant. Age 22 years.
My William received his 'Conditional Pardon' on 21st September 1850. William the Elder received his 'Conditional Pardon' on 9th December 1848.
If you would like any further information, please feel free to contact me, Vicki
vickimaria - I am a distant relation to Thomas Cannon, do you have any information on Patrick and Thomas Cannons parents in Ireland. Am I also correct fro above that the Senior William is the son of Thomas and Mararet.
Also was the Cunnane name only used by the Williams that got deported to Australia?
Hi Nick, nice to hear from you, unfortunately I don't have any info on who Patrick & Thomas's parents were & my DNA matches don't seem to have anything either as I don't belive the records are there. But yes you are correct in that the elder William Cannon was a son of Thomas Cannon & Margaret "Matilda" Grahan.
I think the Cunnane name was only used by the 2 Williams that come to Australia. It could have been that the English person writing out all the documents could not understand the Irish accent. However I did find another use of the Cunnane name on the Irish Convicts site (I'll put the link below) for a James of native of Sligo, John native of Mayo & a Michael & Patrick both natives of Roscommon. I'm not sure if Cunnane is a name in Ireland or not, but on later documention the name seems to have changed to Cannon for the 2 Williams. On my Willian's parents marriage in 1809 the name is noted as Cannon.
I also have a couple of DNA matches to distant cousins that have the Cunnane name from Mayo in their tree, but don't know how we are linked, also Ancestry says they are from my Mother's side which is correct.
Well, not sure if I have been of any help, but I hope so. If you need anything else please let me know
Cheers for now
Vicki

Hi Vicki
I need some help figuring out something. One of the William's is my 3rd-Great Grandfather however I do not know which one. Ancestry thinks Snr might be my grandfather however it also think he married Margaret Egan where I've come across multiple sources that suggest your William married her. Ancestry also believes that my great-grandfather, John Cannon, s the grandson of Margaret Egan and the William who married her.
My current Canon family is all situated around Forbes and I do not know how to differ which one I am related to. It would be awesome if you could contact me about any information regarding a way to differentiate between the two and the information, thank you.
Kind Regards, Abigail
Abigail
I may be able to help I am the great grandson of Michael Henry Cannon and son of Willaim Cannon. I have attached a couple of documents.
Hi Abigail, lovely to hear from you. So, the William Cannon's, or the William Cunnane's, sooo confusing. They were both convicted of Firearms, William Cannon the elder noted as 24 & his cousin William Cannon 22. The only way some of us have been able to figure out exactly who was who was through DNA. So I belive the following to be the correct families.
Your William Cannon, I believe was the son of Thomas Cannon & Matilda "Margaret" Graham who married in Banagher, Offaly (old Kings County) on 14th June 1806. They had a son William Cannon, born in Banagher about 1811 but there are no records to prove this date. After your William obtained his 'ticket of leave in 1843 & was 'unconditional pardon in 1848, he then moved to Victoria & married Margaret Egan in 1852. This family appears to have moved to the Dubbo/Forbes area of New South Wales. I have DNA matches to these families. Their son John Cannon born in Victoria about 1854 (year from a DNA Match) married Annie Maria Kenny in 1894 in Forbes. They had 2 sons, John Francis "Frank" Cannon born 1896 & William Patrick born in 1899 both born in Forbes. John Francis married Ethel Margaret Frances in Cowra in 1941 & I belive William Patrick never married.
My William Cannon, was the son of Patrick Cannon & Mary Connors who also married in Banagher on 12 May 1809. My William Cannon married Elizabeth Daley at St. Matthew's Catholic Church, Windsor, New South Wales on the 6th January 1850 after obtaining their "permisson to marry" on 6th December 1849. Unfortunately the parents aren't named on the Marriage Certificate, however one of the best sources for William's parents is the death certificate for William's brother Patrick Cannon who came to Australia & lived in Moruya near William & his wife Elizabeth. Patrick died in 1893, never having married. On his death certificate it states his parents were Patrick Cannon & Mary.
Abigail without knowing who your parents are it's a bit hard to say for certain but I believe that you can safely assume that you are descended from William Cannon, son of Thomas Cannon & Margaret "Matilda" Graham.
I have a public tree on Ancestry that you can look at. If you search for Ita Elizabeth Nunan born 1925 in Moruya & follow her mother's, mothers line back you will find the Cannon family. My tree name is Burnell Family Tree by vickimaria53.
Hope the above is not too confusing. If you need any further help or info please let me know. Cheers Vicki
This is very helpful, thank you. I do know that I am related to Margaret Egan because my dad confirmed. Thank you for your help, it is greatly appreciated.
Kind Regards, Abigail
Hi Nick, I wonder if they are related to my family. My great great grandfather William Esmond Flood was born in Banagher about 1821 and his Mother was Bridget Cannon. Bridget was born about abt 1819 and died 12 SEP 1874. I can't find records of her birth but it was most likely Banagher. I would assume Bridget is a part of the Cannons living in Banagher at the time mentioned in this thread. Unfortunately I have been unable to find any information about who her parents and siblings were.
I have found when searching church records her name is not spelt the same way every time. Perhaps she was dificult to understand. Her marriage record lists her first name as Margaret, but it's her. Her last name is always latinised so it looks like Cannanan. Sometimes it looks like Canavan. Latinising names, along with cursive and deteriorated books can make it dificult to find information about these people. When searching for the Cannons, I would also search the name Cannanan, Commonan, Canavan, Cannan etc.
Good luck with your research!
Hi Goorambatman, just wanted to say that another spelling is Cunnane. This appears on the convict records for cousing William Cannon & William Cannon, as per the messages above. If your Bridget Cannon is from Banagher then she is more than likely related to the Cannons above. My husband & I visited Banagher in 2019 & just missed meeting a Cannon that came from Tullamore, so mostly likely all the Cannons in Offaly are related is you could go back far enough. Anyway, if you have any questions, please let me know only too glad to help, Cheers Vicki
