Dear John
Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and apologies for the delay in getting back to you.

As you probably know McKenna is quite a common name in the county. Hve you already looked at sites like rootsireland.ie (a subscription site) and/or familysearch.org to find out more about your ancestors?

Do you know what religion they were?
Best wishes

Dear Dan

Have you already used rootsireland.ie or familytsearch.org to find out more about the family? As you probably know given the early search period you refer to, parish records begin at different times depending on the parish. Records for Monaghan RC parish begin in 1835 for baptisms and 1827 for marriages.

For any marriage or baptism event before that time there will be no parish record. It may be the case that your ancestor was born in a parish and at a time that predates parish records or may have been born in another parish in Co. Monaghan. Have a look at the sites listed above and let us know if you learn anything new.

There is a John McKenna mentioned here in 1796:
