HANRATTYs of CORDUFF (KELLY) 1802 - became FINNs farm by 1911

MonaghanMagheross (Monaghan)

hi,

I am searching for information about my g-g-Grandmother Anne HANRATTYs family.

Anne was born in 1846, and in 1868 it looks like she married John McGUIRK of Annagally.

Anne's father was Andrew HANRATTY 1802-1886, and in Griffiths there is only one Andrew in Monaghan, and he lived at CORDUFF (KELLY).

In the 1901 Census the only person alive in CORDUFF (KELLY) that could be Anne's Mother is Elizabeth aged 74y.

Corduff (Kelly) (Carrickmacross (Rural), Monaghan)

Elizabeth has a daughter Mary B.1866, who has married a Bernard FINN.

The couple have 6 children:

Peter Joseph - 13yo,
Patrick A - 11yo,
Lawrence - 9yo
Alice Teresa - 7yo,
Bridget Eliza - 4yo,
Mary Anne - 2yo.

In the 1911 Census, Elizabeth is missing, and Bernard FINN is now the Head of the House, so he must have got the farm.

There is also a 7yo Bernard FINN.

hi,

I came across a birth record for Mary Anne, Father Andrew, Mother Elizabeth REILLY.

Name:Mary Anne Hanratty
Gender:Female
Birth Date:12 May 1866
Birthplace:0486,CARRICKMACROSS,MONAGHAN,IRELAND
Father's Name:Andrew Hanratty
Mother's Name:Elizabeth Rielly

This seems to all match perfectly.

This would make Mary Anne the younger sister of my g-g-Grandmother Anne.

What is probably Elizabeth Hanratty?s death was registered in Carrickmacross Jan ? Mar 1907 Volume 2, page 358. Estimated year of birth 1832.

If you are looking to confirm that Anne Hanratty is the daughter of Andrew Hanratty of Corduff (Kelly) it might be worth getting her marriage certificate to see what townland she gave when she married. (I can see that the marriage was in Dundalk, which is in a different county, but perhaps that was where John was living at that time and she gave a Monaghan address). Her father?s name and occupation on the certificate should also help.

You can check when Andrew ceased to be the tenant of the Corduff farm, and who followed him, right through to 1930 by using the revaluation records in the Valuation Office in Dublin. (They are not on-line unfortunately).

There?s no Hanratty listed in the tithe applotment records for Corduff in 1823 so it appears the Hanrattys arrived between then and 1861 when Griffiths primary valuation was compiled.

I presume you have noticed 2 other Hanratty farms in Corduff in 1861. (Thomas & Patrick). You would expect them to be related to Andrew.

Magheross RC baptisms and marriages only go back to 1858 so no great help from that source in tracing Anne?s baptism or that of any siblings.

That the farm passed to the son-in-law would often indicate there was no male Hanratty left in Ireland able to take it on.

hi Elwyn,

re: the marriage was in Dundalk, which is in a different county,

The record I have for the marriage states it took place in Inniskeen, Monaghan.

John Mcgurk
Ireland Marriages, 1619-1898
marriage: 12 May 1868 —Inniskeen, Mon, Ireland
spouse: Anne Hanratty
bride's father's name: Andrew Hanratty
bride's birth date: 1846
bride's age: 22

RE: That the farm passed to the son-in-law would often indicate there was no male Hanratty left in Ireland able to take it on.

Yes I guessed that - in 1901 the daughter was the only child of Elizabeth in the house.

There is a big gap in age between the two sisters 1846-1866, there must have been other children but these were tough times in Ireland, the others may of emigrated.

re: I presume you have noticed 2 other Hanratty farms in Corduff in 1861.

I missed that, thanks for the heads-up.

Sean,

Re the marriage being registered in another county, I think I have the explanation. The marriage is registered in Dundalk, Co Louth 1868, Volume 7, page 729. However it turns out that the Dundalk civil registration area includes part of Co Monaghan notably the parish of Inishkeen. So the marriage probably took place in Monaghan, as you say, just it shows up under Dundalk in the civil indexes.

You might still consider getting a copy of the civil certificate (which has more information than a religious one) to confirm the family information you have. Apart from the information I mentioned previously, the witnesses can sometimes be interesting too.

hi Elwyn,

re: it turns out that the Dundalk civil registration area includes part of Co Monaghan.

Thanks for that, another lesson learned.

re: the witnesses can sometimes be interesting too.

Yes, I have found they are often family members who can sometimes provide a clue to other family connections.

My g-Grandmother Mary Anne CAULFIELD had a bridesmaid, Mary SHIELS.

When Mary Anne's father died he left money to a Tedavnet Priest SHIELS, to be used for a couple of different donations.

One of the Executors to the Will was also a SHEILS - so the family connection needed investigating imo.

The connection revealed a connection that I could only have guessed at beforehand.

It identified my g-g-Grandfathers brother, and his daughter who married SHEILS, and their Daughter was the SHEILS Bridesmaid at my g-Grandmothers wedding.
