to Margaret 71 and other contributors. I offer the following which may help:
From: WO 25/761/223, Images 520/521 (nationalarchives.gov.uk) British Army Officers up to 1913.
John joined the Monaghan Militia in 1793, age 18. he seerved 10 years then joined the 3rd Garrison Battalion. Ensign 25 Nov 1806 then Lieutenant 18 Feb 1808 "by obtaining 40 men from the 1st Monaghan Reg't of Militia". Served 8 years 6 mths retired on half pay due Ill Health for 13 yrs 8 mths until the above return was completed in 1828 whwen he was 53 and "Willing to Serve". he was residing in Monaghan.
It is possible he served in Malta with the 3rd GB.
he married 25 Sept 1803 in Tinaheley, Co Wicklow to an unknown lady. Seven children;
Francis , b 4 Aug 1804 ( to AUS in 1849, my GG Grandfather)
John Johnston, b 11 june 1806, unknown
Ann JAne, b 2? March 1809 (marries Isaiah Charlton of Tully)
Catherine b 2 Sept 1814 unknown
Matilda b 1 june 1816 unknown
Lepoli ? Leopold? unknown ( Francis in Aus does use the name Leopold for 2 sons)
Carolina? b 2? may 1820 unknown
John dies 22 Feb 1861, age 86, at Glasslough, Co Monaghan.
The Calendar of Wills (proni.gov.uk) names Francis Haire ofDrumcrin, Co Fermanagh, as one of the executors.
Now this Francis is more likely to be a nephew rather than a brother given he was born 1810, died 1875, married Martha circa 1840 and had a son Francis who married Eleanor Moore (dec'd prior 1901). This Francis was dec'd prior 1911 (refer Census details 1901,1911)
Now from left field we have the following;
Francis Haire of Drumcrin is named as a co-executor in the Will of Martha Haire (nee Moore)who died 16 May 1890 (can be found proni.gov.uk/Calendar of Wills).
She first married a john Moore in 1878, Drumlina Par Killeevan?. They have a son Archibald James Moore b 1880. John dies (his will is available as well) and Martha remarries to Johnston Haire of Roosky, Co Monaghan in late 1887. they have a son Edward Johnston Haire b 1889 but dies 29 Nov 1918, Roosky, Co. Monaghan.
Both John Moore's and Martha's WIlls are full of references to cousins and etc and gets quite involved.
Questions;
How is Francis Haire of Drumcrin connected to Martha Moore/Haire and maybe Johnston Haire?
Were Martha and John Moore actually related somehow? Why does Martha have Haire cousins?
And does it all conect to our John Haire?
Happy digging
