John Atkinson (1800/1805 - 1872)

Meath

I am looking for information about John Atkinson, my great great grandfather. I am interested in his parents and other family members.

From his recorded age at death (3 records) he was born between 1800 and 1805.

I believe he was born in County Meath, possibly Trim or Robinstown.

He was married to Eleanor Jackson in 1833 (Diocese of Meath) and they had 3 children - Thomas Henry (1830), Jackson (1835) and James (1837). Eleanor died in 1842

John is recorded as Deputy Clerk of Trim (1842) and farmer (Jackson Baptism certificate)

The Atkinson Family Grave is in the Cemetery of Cathedral Church of St Patrick, Trim and lists a brother Thomas who died 25 March 1853, aged 51.

The family were Protestant

RootsIreland has this transcription for a John Atkinson, bap. 1810, child of Thomas and Brid. Interesting that this John's first son was called Thomas (seen in online trees). Irish naming patterns had the first son being named after the paternal grandfather, as you likely know. The date may be a bit "off" the dates you have, but the info on death certs is not always accurate. Irish people at the time were not always aware of their birth date. Bottom line...I am not sure if this is your John, but it might be.

Name: John Atkinson

Date of Baptism: 09-Nov-1810

Address: Hurlstown

Parish/District: ORISTOWN

Gender: County Co. Meath

Denomination:

Father: Thos Atkinson

Mother: Brid ()

Hello Patricia,

Thank you for your reply and it could be a relative, although Oristown is quite a distance from Trim.

I didn't know that the Irish had a tradition of naming their sons after the grandfather. My father was named Thomas, probably after John's son, his grandfather. His elder brother was

called John, perhaps after his great grandfather.

I'm not certain where to go from here, I haven't used IrelandXO before.

Here's info about the naming patterns:

  • 1st son was named after the father’s father
  • 2nd son was named after the mother’s father
  • 3rd son was named after the father
  • 4th son was named after the father’s eldest brother
  • 1st daughter was named after the mother’s mother (but sometimes the father's mother)
  • 2nd daughter was named after the father’s mother
  • 3rd daughter was named after the mother
  • 4th daughter was named after the mother’s eldest sister
