Carol:
Do you know the years of death for James and Bridget?
Roger McDonnell
Hello, Thank You for your response. Please see attached. This is the info that I have from Family Search. Regards Carol Zoladz
Carol:
James Smith and Mary Sands were married July 29 1858 at Athboy RC church. The subscription site Roots Ireland has baptismal records (transcriptions) for six children: James 1859 Bridget born March 24 1861 and baptized March 27th Mary 1863 Margaret 1867 Rose 1870 Michael 1873. The family lived in the townland of Knockshangan in Athboy civil parish.
The family was not in Knockshangan in the 1901 census. I looked for death records for James and Mary up to 1901 but did not find a good lead.
Is it possible that James and Mary and their children emigrated together around 1880?
Roger
Hello, To my knowledge James Smyth and Bridget Sands Athboy Ireland did not emigrate. Bridget Smyth Murray and William Murray did and lived in Chicago these are my great grandparents.I am searching for there naturalization papers. Please recheck The PDF. Regard, Carol Zoladz
Carol:
I was able to locate the 1892 death record for James Smyth. See below. James had fallen off a ladder and died. There was a coroner's inquest.
I did not locate a death record for Bridget. I also searched the civil marriage records and was unable to locate a marriage record for any of the children.
Likely James was buried at St. James cemetery in Athboy. For someone who died in 1892 likely there is no headstone. Families could not afford the expense.
Roger
Would St. James Church have the marriage and burial records?Thank You Regards, Carol Zolasz
Carol:
You can contact the parish https://www.athboyparish.ie/church/st-james-church-athboy/
Likely the parish does not have burial records from 1892. I doubt there are any church marriage records for the children.
Roger
Thank You for the info you have sent. By chance are the Catholic Church Records archived in one location ? As an example here in the States they are recorded in the local archdiocese.Regards,, Carol Zoladz
Carol:
Irish church records are held at the parish level.
I live near Baltimore and the parish records are held at the parish level not centrally at the Archdiocese.
