Mary Knox

Kells (Meath)

My ancestor, Mary Knox, was from Kells inCounty Meath. She had a sister, Margaret Knox. Her parents were Philip Knox and Bridget Knox (nee McGrath). In 1849 at age 22 Mary landed in Sydney. This puts her birth year as 1827. Margaret arrived in Australia on the ship, Northern Light, in 1858 when she was 21. That puts her birth year as 1837. They were Roman Catholic. I'm having difficulty finding any information on Mary and Margaret and their parents, in Ireland. MANY THANKS!

There are very few Knox baptismal records in Co. Meath on the subscription site Roots Ireland. The earliest record is for a Catherine Nox who was baptized in Kells RC parish on January 22 1837. Parents were Henry Nox and Bridget Mc----? This record was a transcription and when I went to the actual parish register https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000635212?locale=en#page/31/mode/1up  I could not locate the record but obviously the Roots Ireland transcriber did see a record.

The overall condition of the Kells register was "poor" and likely the records for Mary and Margaret were either not there or illegible to a transcriber.

I checked the Griffiths Valuation head of household listing from the early 1850s and did not see a Henry Knox or a Philip Knox listed.

Have you considered a general DNA test?
