Jennings + Mulroy

Templemore (Mayo)

Hello. I am helping a friend search her ancestors. The information we have comes from other family trees and we haven't seen records. These ancestors were James Jennings and Nancy Mulroy who were apparently married in Strade in 1828. J Jennings is said to have come from "Spike" Turlough. N. Mulroy may have come from Ashbrook and her father's name could be Richard. Their first child was Mary J Jennings born in 1829. (My friend descends from Mary.) Their next known child, David, was born 1836 - 1839 in America. The family emigrated sometime between the births of Mary and David.

I am wondering if there could be a record of their marriage. Also couldn't find a birth record for Mary. There could have been other children who died young.

Finally, we are planning to be in Turlough and Strade for a very short visit (only a couple hours) in May. Could anyone provide advice about what to see there? I imagine we will find the church.

Many thanks for any help you could provide.

Hi Mary,

Thank you for sending these links which I'll be looking at! For the NLI registers, did you see James Jennings in them with address of Spink? I opened the link and I see the date ranges of the baptism and marriage records and they seem too late for him. If you have found him in there, could you give me any guidance as to where to look for him?

Thank you very much!!

Cindy,

Unfortunately, the years on the link are when the church recorded the baptisms and marriages. The civil registry did not start records until 1864.

Cindy:

As Mary indicated there are no church records for Straide/Templemore RC parish until 1872. I located a history of the civil parish of Templemore from 1837 and there was an RC chapel in the parish close to the Dominican Abbey. See link.

I also found a record of a Catherine Jennings who was from Spink and died in 1946. Spink is a placename. I need to do some more research to determine the official townland name.

Many thanks to Mary and Roger. I think we will visit the Turlough graveyard and look for the Catherine Jennings tomb. Also, it looks like a beautiful site! I will also write to Maria at the library to see if she knows where Spink is.

Sincerely, Cindy
