Winifred Thornton nee Lynch b.1818 Galway

Hi there have a look at these church records she could be listed here.

CHURCH OF IRELAND:Church of Ireland parish registers for the period up to 1870-are publicrecords. Registers are available for about one third of the parishes, however many were destroyedin the Public Records Office in Dublin in 1922. Most are still held by the local clergy, althoughsome are in the National Archives of Ireland and others are in the Representative Church BodyLibrary in Dublin. A list of all surviving registers is available in the National Archives. http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42 and http://www.nationalarchives.ie/. The Anglican Record Projectis has created an index to their records: http://ireland.anglican.org/cmsfiles/pdf/AboutUs/library/AngRecord/bunclodyunionindex.pdf PRESBYTERIAN:Presbyterian registers are held in three main locations: in local custody, in the PublicRecords of Northern Ireland (PRONI) http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/family_history.htm and atthe Presbyterian Historical Society http://www.presbyterianhistoryireland.com in Belfast. PRONIhas microfilm copies of almost all registers in Northern Ireland and also lists of records held by thePresbyterian Historical Society. For the rest of Ireland, almost all records are in local custody. It candifficult to locate these as many congregations in the South have moved, amalgamated, or simplydisappeared over the last sixty years. The next thing you could do is find the counties and places in Ireland your family names are mostprevalent. Look at the website http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/surname/ and perhapssomething will match some other clue you may have found elsewhere? If nothing turnsup ? it is advisable to try different variations of the spellings of the names. If you have a possiblefirst name you could try the Irish Census 1901, 1911 at www.census.nationalarchives.ie/ or the landvaluation record called Griffiths Valuationhttp://askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml

There is an Anthony Thornton listed as living in Ballinrobe Town in Griffith's Valuations, 1850's

This is also a very good website for checking Gravestones in Co Mayo

I see an Anthony Thornton,  Tourmakeady but this is an infant

There are three Anthonys in the 1901, Census the last one I think may be the father of the Thomas on the Gravestone in Tourmakeady.  (the age of Thomas matches with his death in 1927)

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/results.jsp?census_year=19…

By 1911 Anthony has passed

The other two Anthony's in the Census are in one outside Castlebar (Cloonkeen) and one in Ardnaree (Ballina)

This is a good site for North Mayo (Ballina) area if you want to check it out.....................

Some of the names mentioned in the Links may mean something to you, if you think any of them matches your Thorntons, feel free to ask further questions.

I notice most of the Thorntons are Roman Catholic

Wow! Thanks for your help Dympna.

I don't think the Anthony Thorntons in the 1901 Census are the one I am looking for as he and his wife moved to Scotland and appear in the Scottich 1861 census.  i also have records for their deaths there.  He could be the Anthony in the Valuation report though as I can't find them in Scotland before 1861.  Is there any way of finding further details of the people that appear on the valuation reports?  Is Ballinrobe near Galway?  His wife winefred (nee Lynch) was born in Galway.

I will investigate further. Thanks so much for your help.

Melissa

Ballinrobe is in County Mayo is about 10 miles from the border of County Galway. The Thornons from the counties of Galway, Mayo and Clare are very likely Of Gaelic origin and Catholic. When the Draighnens name was anglicized from Gaelic it became Drennen or Drinan or O'Drinan. But later in Galway, Clare and Mayo these Drennans changed their name to Thornton which was a translation of the Gaellic meaning of Draighnen which means Blackthorn. The Thorntons of Northern Ireland or Dublin are more likely to be of English origin but the Thorntons of Western Ireland are very likely to be of Gaelic origin and also Catholic.

There were 8 appplications for Poverty Relief Loans in the name of John Thornton of Ballinrobe 1834 -1845. This was a micro-finance scheme which operated  1821-1874. Other people with the Thornton surname in Castlebar area applied for loans 1840-1. There may have been others. I was researching only Thomas and John Thornton.

I noticed mention of Thornton of Cloonkeen/ Castlebar. Some of them may have been related to my GGF's sister.             1842 Thomas Thornton married Mary Loftus. A witness was John Thornton. Thomas Thornton occupied property in Westland townland in Ballyhean parish on Griffiths Valuation.                                                                                                                     John Thornton, aged 50, who may have been son of Thomas & Mary, occupied house no. 1 Westland, Ballyhean parish , (Cloonkeen), on 1901 census. Anthony Thornton, aged 56 was also in the household. I didn't come accross a baptism of Anthony when I was looking for the children of Thomas & Mary.

Another Castlebar Thornton was Malachy who was a Sergeant in R.I.C. in 1870s. His wife was Bridget Walsh. They lived in Castle St. in 1872.
