Peytons in Mayo

Mayo

I’ve been trying to trying to find out more about my paternal 2nd and third great grandfathers, Michael and Anthony Peyton for several years now.   I am struggling with the Irish records, if they exist.  The earliest record I have for Anthony and Michel is the 1861 England Census, where they are living in Yorkshire, England but lists them born in Ireland.  Anthony/Antony (b~1811) is married to Ann (b~1813, unsure her maiden name) and has 4 children: Michael/Mikel (b~1844), Mary (b~1846), Cathreen (b~1848), and Ann (b~1851). There are Prices/Treaner/McNolty living with them at this time. The 1871 England census for Michael does say he was born in Mayo, Ireland and Michael’s marriage record to Louisa Bates in England is in the Non-conformist records. I wasn’t able to find much in terms of records for Anthony, Ann and their daughters.

Would anyone have any ideas or suggestions on where to look next?

Thanks,

Serena

Above are the Peytons who appear in the Tithe Applotment Books for Mayo from 1824 to 1832.  Since your Anthony's eldest son was named Michael, it is quite possible his father was also named Michael and is in the list above.  (Irish naming patterns called for the eldest son to be named for the paternal grandfather.)

If the Peytons were still in Mayo at the time of Griffith's Valuation in 1857, five Michael Peytons were listed as head of household. I did not find an Anthony.

Thanks Patricia, I’ve been trying to see if I can locate any records for the boarders living with them who were also Irish to see if any of them come from similar areas as the Peyton’s you located but haven’t had much luck yet in going back a generation for them either at the moment.  Out of curiosity would you know if any of those towns had quarries/ Mason workers near them?  Anthony and the other neighbors are all Mason laborers on the 1861 England census except Michael who was a shoemaker apprentice.
