Michael Carrol/Carroll from Ballaghaderreen

Mayo

I am researching my 2x great grandfather Michael Carroll from Ballaghaderreen now in Roscommon but formerly Mayo.

He was born in July1861 and was living in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent by 1881.

On the census he says that he is from Ballaghaderreen.  I know from his marriage certificate that his father was called John.

He is Carrol on marriage certificate but Carroll on death certificate and all children are Carroll.

I'm visiting Ballaghaderreen in 2 weeks time.

Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks

Carracastle is a small rural village in County Mayo. It is roughly halfway between the Mayo town of Charlestown and the Roscommon town of Ballaghaderreen. The area has an estimated population of 725 people and has a church, community centre, shop/pub, national and pre-school.

Angela:

Many emigrants would list the nearest big town as their place of residence rather than the exact townland. Bullockfield is also know as Derrynanaff. Derrynanaff is about four miles west of Ballaghaderreen and before you get to the village of Carracastle. As you indicated, Derrynanaff was in Co.Mayo but the Local Government Act of 1898 moved a number of Mayo townlands in that area( including Derrynanaff) into Co. Roscommon

The village of Carracastle is still in Mayo.

My grandfather came from this townland. In 1901, there were three Carroll households in this townland in 1901. http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Roscommon/Ballaghaderreen/Derrynanaff/1661633/

John Carroll and Bridget Carroll were married on February 10 1858 at Carracastle RC church. The transcription notes indicated third degree of consanguinity which means they were second cousins.

Michael also had a brother Thomas baptized May 28 1859.

Thank you so much for the information.  Does that mean that Bridget's maiden name was Carroll too?  The 3rd record with the large family are the family of one of my Ancestry dna matches so are somehow related to me.

Angela:

Yes, Carroll was her maiden name.

Thank you so much for confirming that. Do you think this may have been them in 1871? Living in Stoke-on-Trent with Mary, John and Edward? If so where would Thomas and Michael likely to have been?

Michael had 4 sons including my great grandfather with his first wife - Michael, Thomas, John and Edward, although common names, seems a bit of a coincidence?

Angela:

Possibly Thomas and Michael remained in Mayo with grandparents and joined the family later in England or they were living in England with grandparents.
