Kirby Family Cogaula Townland Islandeady Parish Co. Mayo

Mayo

Volunteers:

I'm moving this message from Kaily Kirby to the message board from another IRO site. Roger

My name is Kaily Kirby. I am researching my family history looking to connect with any distant living relatives still residing in County Mayo, specifically around Islandeady/Coguala/Westport area. My great great grandfather was John Kirby and he had siblings named James, Patrick and Norah, Austin and Edward. I don’t know if John himself went to Toronto, Canada or his children but my grandfather was born in Toronto on 1922. His name was Aloysius Joseph Kirby. He served on the Canadian Navy in WWII. He married Marianne and they came to California, USA in the early 1950s. I am looking to find if any of John Kirby’s children stayed in the area of Islandeady pr County Mayo. Thank you so much for any information is helpful. God bless you.

I located two Kirby families in Cogaula in the 1901 census and the same two heads of households were there in 1926. I have not had to time to further research.

Our online access to civil marriage records ends in 1950 and death records in 1975. From what I can see on the Internet, you should have distant cousins still in Cogaula. There may be Kirbys there but also some of the female Kirbys married and stayed local. Some records of interest are below.

Yes it is the John Jr and Bridget line that I have common ancestry with since his father John Sr (married Mary ODonnell) is my great great great grandfather. So I goes John Sr (married Mary O Donnell) and they had Michael Joseph (my great great grandfather who came to Toronto Canada) John Jr (who married Bridget Cusack) Stephen J (who also emigrate to USA)) James E (emigrated to USA) and Catherine (emigrated to USA). John jr and Bridget Cusack are the descendants that stayed in Ireland and their 10 children are Maria Mary Kirby( married John Crowley) Andrew Kirby, Delia ( or Bridget “Sissy”) Kirby,  James Kirby, Norah (married a Chambers), John Kirby (a third John?), Sena Kirby, Gretta Kirby, Patrick J Kirby and last Michael W Kirby.

Update the original John Kirby married an Alice flannely and they had Michael Joseph who married Maria Jordon. John Kirby and Alice Flannely left Ireland in 1850 with one year old Michael. There may be more children from John and Alice before they left Ireland though.

Kaily:

I did not have any success finding any Kirby baptismal records with father John and mother Alice Flannelly and related searches. On the subscription site FindMyPast.ie I did find an Islandeady baptismal record transcription for an Ellen Kirby with father John and mother Ellen Flanny. The baptism was in October 1848 ( the transcriber could not find the date). Here is the link to the microfilmed parish register https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/1063?locale=en  However, I also found another baptismal record for a John Kirby with father John and mother Ellen Flanny. Possibly young Ellen and John were twins?

I also found a February 8 1851 Islandeady baptismal record for a Margaret Kerby with parents John Kerby and Sally Flannery. I know you mentioned family left in 1850.

This is what my uncle Father John Kirby was able to send me that shows my Kirby lineage. I don’t know if everything is 100% accurate but it’s much better info than what I was going off. Hoping it leads to relatives still in Ireland.

Special thank you Roger for your attention to my pleas for assistance across the pond.

Kaily:

I forgot to mention in my prior note that the infant John Kirby was born October 22nd 1848 which led me to conclude that Ellen and John may have been twins. The parish register is not the best and so far I have not located any of the baptisms.
