Luke, Irish civil death records are free on line to 1974, from 1900 to 1974 there are 670 registered deaths of a John Barrett, of these Castlebar has 30, Swinford 2 and Westport 5 all approx, these are registration districts, there are also 2 in Tuam in Galway but may include parts of Mayo as the districts are not necessarily within county boundaries, also it is possible he died in hospital or lived beyond 1974 when he would be 90, you can see the register entries here https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/ it is free and only civil records are relevant in the time period, you have to sign in and tick a box but free otherwise.
If the person dies in hospital the person present at death will not be family so that area of certainty will be missing, like if the person present is his wife or child you can be more certain you have the correct person.
The 1901 and 1911 census are free online as would be his marriage, the 1926 census should be available online next year probably after April 2026 to comply with the 100 year rule. The census and marriage address would help if he died at home as the address is on the certificate.
Happy Hunting
