Heritage Sites in Mayo

Mayo

Hello,

I will be in Ireland first two weeks of May and although I had hoped to find some ancestral homeplaces I was unsuccessful, so when I visit in County Mayo, where my ancestor Ann Griffin says she is from and since I don't know the exact place I would like to know if there are any museums, folk parks or places that show life in Mayo throughout the years that would help me learn more about life in Mayo.

Thank you for any suggestions you may have.

K,

You might consider Croagh Patrick, near Westport and Ballintubber Abbey, near Ballinrobe as a start.

If you Google them it will give you some information of their history.

McCoy

Highly recommend a visit to the Mullet Peninsula and its Blacksod Memorial Garden, which commemorates the Blacksod emigration scheme. And don't miss beautiful Achill Island.

Thank you all so much, I will check out your suggestions.

Someone asked about my Annie Griffin. She is a mystery only her death certificate here in the States says Co. Mayo birthplace and I have DNA matches from Mayo also.

She is very elusive here for many years, I have no parents or siblings names, so it is hard to try to look in Ireland. I have found a Ann Griffin baptized in Balla, Tuam, Mayo father named Martin Griffin. Birthdate May of 1841. This is close to what she says here in U.S. She married a John Patrick aka John or Patrick Hughes but I don't know if it was in Ireland or States. I've searched passenger lists for both names and can't pinpoint one. She had two children supposedly in New Orleans, no records there either. As I said a mystery, but I thought I wanted to learn more about life in Mayo regardless.

p.s. I think I need to read all of the records of Balla to see if the Ann Griffin baptized, married there or died or if she disappears (emigrated)??
