AUSTRALIA:Have you checked the immigration records in Australia? Generally, more informationwas given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure. The University of Woolongong hasproduced, on microfiche, a complete index and transcript of all information concerning immigrantsof Irish origin recorded on ships' passenger lists between 1848 and 1867. These are useful for findingout an exact place of origin as well as parents' names. The Public Record Office of Victoria has goodonline databases of settlers at www.prov.vic.gov.au Otherwise, other records may be found in theColonial Office Papers of the UK National Archives, class reference CO 201. This class contains a widevariety of records, including petitions for assisted passages, emigrants' lists, records of emigrants onboard ship, petitions from settlers for financial assistance and much more. Also try these links sir good luck with your seach; The next thing you could do is find the counties and places in Ireland your family names are mostprevalent. Look at the website http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/surname/ and perhapssomething will match some other clue you may have found elsewhere? If nothing turnsup ? it is advisable to try different variations of the spellings of the names. If you have a possiblefirst name you could try the Irish Census 1901, 1911 at www.census.nationalarchives.ie/ or the landvaluation record called Griffiths Valuationhttp://askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml The National Archives of Irelandhttp://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introductio… The National Library of Irelandhttp://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx The National Archives UK ? genealogy search:http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/ The Public Records Office of Northern Irelandhttp://www.proni.gov.uk/index/family_history.htm The US National Archives:http://www.archives.gov/ The National Archives Scotland- family history:http://www.nas.gov.uk/familyHistory/ The Library & Archives of Canada -http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/index-e.html Irish Newspaper Archives:http://www.irishnewsarchive.com/

The surname Barrett is very common in North Mayo - in particular in the parish of Kilcommon (Erris) and Kilmore (Erris). Kilcommon parish was divided into three Parishes: Belmullet, Kiltane and Kilcommon in Sept 1873. The surname Shaw was in Doolough, Kiltane. Arthur Shaw was a nephew to one of the Bingham landlords and he inherited Bingham's lodge in Doolough. Many Barretts came from Kiltane parish but back then it was Kilcommon. There would be many in Kilmore (Erris) also.

This link gives an good account of Doolough. It appears to be from a book that was written in the early 1980's.

Hello

We may have the same great great great grandfather James Barrett.

I do not know if James Barrett and Bridget Larkin from Kilbride Mayo also had a son named Anthony but I know he had the following children: Patrick (1793-1890), Thomas (179?-1882), Peter (1809-1894),  and Mary (1794). Patrick, Thomas, Peter, and Mary moved to Canada around 1828.  There may also have been a Dominic, Laurence, Bridget, and Cecelia

I found  the following

The Tithe Appointment Book shows James Barrett from Lower Carrowedin, the diocese of Killala, parish of Kilbride, County Mayo in 1833 and 1834.  The Tithe book also shows John Barrett living in the townland of Kilbride and Peter Barrett living in Lower Carronedin.

The McCabe list of Irish Canal workers (circa 1828), who wanted relatives to join them to  work on the Rideau Canal in Canada, states: Thomas Barrett has two brothers, Patrick and Peter, who reside in Killala Ireland and are known to Philip Gardiner, esqr. of Carnowden.  James Barrett was their father and I am a descendant of Peter.

A death certifcate of one of his children here in Canada shows that this James Barrett, born around 1770, was married to Bridget Larkin.
