Touhill Family of Castlereagh

MayoKilfian (Mayo)

My great-great grandmother was Bridget O'Toole, born in Kilfian (Ratheskin) Jan 22, 1833 to William Toole and Catherine Dougher, and immigrated to Wilkes-barre Pennsylvania in 1865.  I'm trying to track down the rest of William's family from the area.

My family info says that William's father was Michael Toole/Toohill, and his mother was an O'Connell, but I don't have any records for them.  I found Thomas Toughill and Patrick Toughill living in Drinagham in the 1818 Kilfian Tax collector records, but no Michael, and I'm not sure if there is any relation. I've already mined the Giffith valutation and tithes recrods, as well as the parish records, and have records for William, but no solid information on his siblings/parents.

There is a Touhill family, from Castlereagh, that is burried in Killala cemetery: Bridget Touhill, 28 Sep 1963; her brother Anthony 2 Nov 1973; and their brother Michael. I haven't had any luck yet tracking down any information on any of their living family member to see if they might have any info on the Touhill family that was living in Kilfian in the early 1800's.  Does anyone have a local directory, or an idea of where I might look to see if there is living family, and how I could contact them?

Hi Csgirl,

My ancestors are from Kilfian as well (Kincon).  I am California as well.  Let me check on how to get a local phone book, and some local resources.  For now, you might find this at least interesting.

Here are some more records from http://www.kilfiancrosskin.com

Death

1826 December 25 - Mary Toole, Ballykenlettragh, deranged for some years, died without sacraments

1828 August 14 - Anne Toohill, Keerglen, age 85, old age

1830 June 6 - Anthony Toohill, Drinighan,

Baptism

1827 March 25 - John to Thomas Munily and Catherine Toohil, Ballinagavna; sp. Thomas Murphy and Mary Doherty

1829 August 27 - Michael to Thomas Munnelly and CatherineToohil, Ballinagavna; sp. William Toohil and CatherineGilroy

1830 April 3 - Catherine to Anthony Toohill and Honor Kearney, Doonanarroo; sp. Pat Higgins and Jane Harrison

Marriages

February 11, 1827 - Anthony Toohill and Bridget Connor,Doonanarroo; witnesses, Martin Toohil and Catherine O'Hora

February 27, 1827 - William Ferguson and Mary Toohill, Creaves; witnesses, Michael Ruane and Mary Kelly

May 11, 1828 - Michael Kelly, Annaghbeg, and Bridget Kelly; witnesses, Roger Toohill and Barabra Crane

You might also want to see if you can map out families from the 1901/1911 census, to see if you can connect them back to your family.  I've done that and was able to find a couple of family connections that way.

Oh, and one more thing, I don't know if you noticed this Tithe:

Toohill Thos Drinahane Crossmolina Mayo 1833
Toohill   Barrenarren Crossmolina Mayo 1833

http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/reels/tab//004587427/004587427_00008.pdf

While the index says 1832, it is actually from 1815.  My Loughney (Laughney) ancestor is also on it, from Kincon townland.

Oh, and all of my Mayo ancestors settled in Scranton ...

Thanks John. I did see those records and I've worked my way through about 80% of the kilfian parish records (from LDS). My 3rd great grandfather william lived in Ratheskin and Rathreagh after his marriage. I dont have a birth record for him, so what I dont know is if the Tooles living in Drinagham are family of his. I don't WANT to assume at just because they have the same surname and lived so close that they are related.  But...

William and his family settled in WILKES BARRE in Pennsylvania.  I have notes from great aunts that the O'Tooles were from Scranton, but all of Williams family lived in Wilkes-barre. I wonder then if your Tooles may be indeed related to mine :). What where their names?

Actually, I have no Tooles, my Kilfian ancestors are Loughney and Duffy in Kincon (or Rooghan, Rathreagh).  I've been looking at some of the other Loughney's and Duffy's in the area.  I also have another part of my tree in Kilcummin - Cunningham and Langan. Then finally, another branch on Kilmoremoy (outside of Ballina) Rochfords/Ratchford & Conmee.  All of them settled in Scranton / Lackawanna Township.

I was able to scan the parish register for Kilfian Parish, so if you'd like to see them, I can send a link.

Another idea is also to take a look at the canceled rent books - these are available as microfilm from Family Search / FHC.  Basically, areas kept rent books after Griffiths where then marked when things changed.  You can see who took over the rent after people died / left, etc.

Ah, sorry for confusion! If you have a link for the parish records that would be very helpful. You can email it to me if you like

By the way, can you tell me more about the 1818 Kilfian Tax collector records - I haven't heard of them.

Ya: http://sources.nli.ie/Record/MS_UR_066983/Holdings#tabnav

They are at the National Archives I Dublin. As far as I can tell that is the only place you can get them. I was just in Ireland this week, and I visited the archives. Unfortunately I didn't have a lot of time there so I only had time to full copy down about 2/3rds. And I was surprised with  how restrictive the Archives where. They don't allow you pens in the reading room, absolutely no pictures. So I just have my pencil written notes. I will look through what I have for your family.

John,

In the 1818 record, there was a Seehane DUFF living in Cloontakillew (with Edmund McLaughlin).

In Kincon:

  • Hugh Higgins, Esq
  • Francis Cox
  • Philip Connor
  • Michael and James (?)

I didn't get ALL the records copied, since I ran out of time (had to scan through at the end looking for my family).  So it is possible that there were other DUFFY or LOUGHNEY at the end.

Hi,

While checking my own family history I came across your posts, I grew up living 1/2 mile from where the Touhils from Castlereagh lived. They all died shortly before I was born and I recall being told that none of them married and they had no living relations.

If I find any Kilfian records I will pass them on.

Thanks for the info Shane. That is a bummer, but now I know.

We may be related.  My Touhill and Langan ancestors settled in Pittston and Scranton PA.  I traced Edmond/Edward Touhill/Toohill/Twohill to his marriage to Mary Lane in Fermoy, Co Cork in 1831 and the birth of their son, Patrick, in Fermoy in 1832.  They sailed to Canada soon after and then migrated south to Pennsylvania.

My Great-grandmother, Mary Langon, was born in Ballina, Co Mayo in 1842. She emigrated to Pennsylania around 1850.  I would be interested in corresponding to anyone with these common ancestors.

LWM, do you have more info on you Langon ancestor?  Was it in Ballina specifically, or in the Ballina registration district? My 2nd great grandmother was from Castlemagee, KIlcummin Parish - and this was in the Ballina Registration district.

Hi John;

I have to apologize because I spelled Langan wrong; it is not Langon.  All the information I have is that she was born in Ballina, Co Mayo on 29 December, 1842.  According to different family members,  her father may have been eitther Thomas, Patrick or Micheal and   her mother's name was  Mary Linsky on her death certificate.  She left for America between 1850 and 1853 to llive with a brother named Patrick in Pittston, Pennsylvania.  I have been unable to located her birth records and am wondering if her parish was Kilmormoy.

Hope this is helpful
