Looking for William Muldowney

MayoKilconduff (Mayo)

WILLIAM MULDOWNEY indicated on the UK Census from 1851 to 1881 that he was born in Mayo. His age varied on these censuses but the family stated that he was 62 when he died in 1885 in Walsall Staffordshire UK. Parents and siblings are not known.

Recently a family member suggested that he came from Swineford Co. Mayo. His wife Mary Durkin was more than likely born in Middlesex UK to Patrick Durkin and Sarah Regan, originally from Ireland. No marriage record for William and Mary has been located in the UK.

Williams only known son was named Malachi John (B. 1854 Walsall). This may suggest that he had relative (perhaps his father) named either Malachi, John and/or a combination of the two.

Any help or suggestion in tracing William or his family in Co. Mayo is appreciated.

Kathleen:

I checked Roots Ireland for baptismal records for a William Muldowney from 1816-1836 and got no records. Many of the churches in Mayo do not have records for that time period. The Kilconduff records start in 1822-1826 then there is a large gap and they pickup in 1841. I'm guessing that William was born right before 1822.

I checked the Tithe listings and the only Muldowney listed for Mayo was a James Muldowney in Rabows townland in Meelick civil parish. NOTE: Rabows is likely Rabaun. Meelick borders Kilconduff.

The 1856 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing shows five Muldowney entries in Kilconduff civil parish. http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/mayo/kilconduff.htm

The Griffiths for Meelick shows six Muldowney entries including four in Rabaun townland.

One final suggestion. The Mormon Church microfilmed the Kilconduff RC records. The catalog shows they have 1822-1900 for baptisms and earlier for marriages. You could order the film from Salt Lake City and hopefully there is a Mormon Family History Center near you in Canada.where the film is sent  Maybe you can find records for possible siblings. Here is the link to their catalog. You want film 0926020.

I located a possible marriage for William Muldowney and Mary Durcan in the Catholic records for Swineford on 14 February 1844. A record in ine same collection lists a possible daughter, Kitty baptzed on 25 March 1847. This record shows parent of Tullinacara. I have not found any other information about Kitty.

As stated in previous posting William and Mary immigrated to England where they settled in Walsall Staffordshire. Four children were born and baptized in Walsall. Three survived, married and had families..I have information about the children and most of their descendants. Unfortunately the descendanrs I am in touch with do not know any more that I do. One daughter emmigrated first to the USA (1868) then to Canada (about 1874).

On the UK Censuses Mary Durkin is recorded as born in different locations - Deptford England, Middlesex England,. or Co. Mayo, Ireland.and with wide variations in year of birth.

I would love to learn where my 3Xgreat grandparents William and Mary Muldowney were born in Ireland. Any help/suggestions of new websites or sources to search are gratefully accepted.

THANK YOU

Hi Kathleen!

I think you found the marriage record for your ancestors. William Muldowney is not a common name so likely you have the correct record. Ironically, I checked two subscriptions sites: Roots Ireland and FindMyPast.ie and they do not have the record. Not sure why since the names seem legible. No placename shown which was unfortunate.

The 1847 Kitty Muldowney record is likely for the same family. The townland spelling is Tullanacorra.

I looked at the 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Tullanacorra and there were no Muldowney records but there were five Durkan records : Daniel, Martin, James. Ellen and Mary. Likely William and Mary were living in one of those households.

As I mentioned back in 2014, No William Muldowney baptismal records back in the 1820s. There are five Mary Durcan records in Swinford RC parish in the period 1822-1826. One record is January 20 1824 father James Durkan and mother Mary Durcan. Possibly this James is the one listed in Tullanacorra in 1855.

Thanks your reply. I saw the listings for the various Durkins. Mary Durkin's parent were Patrick Durkin and his wife Sarah Regan. So far I have not found anything on them. This was family knowledge.

It is good to have someone support my findings for the Muldowney/Durkin marriage and daughter in Co. Mayo.
