Practices in 1900 for widow's children

Kilbride (Mayo)

My grandmother's mother died in 1901, leaving her husband and maybe 10 children (not sure if 1 or 2 died before her death).  The husband appears in the 1901 census as a widower with only 4 of the children.  I found a daughter as a servant in another household.  But can't find the other 4 who would have been ages 1 through 7.  I've looked at other households in the township, but all have sons or daughters (except one which listed grandchild, but last name wasn't father's).

He remarried in 1904ish and appears on the 1911 with 2 children from the first marriage (but not the 2 from the 1901 census) and 4 from the second.

So my question is whether family members who took in some of the children would have listed them as sons and daughters on the census, perhaps so they weren't taken away?

The census listed was Mayo, Connemara, Ballinrobe, Owenbrin, Kilbride, Ross Parish

Perhaps give us the names so that we can take  a look. Thanks.

My Grandmother was Bridget O'Brien born 1900 (or maybe 1899), her father Patrick, and mother Winifred.  I located the parents on the Kilbride, Owenbrin 1901 census in the house numbered 2.  I've attached a family group report from Ancestry, with what I've collected.  Some info came from other public trees that had all these children listed.  I've been able to confirm some data with naturalization forms and other info.  For example, I know for a fact that William reported here is in fact Bridget's brother, lived in same apartment building in 1950.  I also know from my grandmother's telling, that her mother died, and her father remarried and did not want to take on the little ones.  So, where did they go?  I've created a database of the whole 1901 township so I can search the households, and children of the same name and age do not appear anywhere.  I looked in neighboring townships also,  Finny and Kilmore, no luck.

Patrick's parents were John O'Brien and Bridget McNally I believe (from Ancestry), but I have almost no facts on them.

Some public trees have birth/baptism/marriage records from RootsIreland.  Some of those list the mother as Winny OBrien.  I think one of my great grandparents had a sister that went by Winny, Bridget's sister Winifred was an informant on her aunt, Winifred's death certificate.  Can't get more confusing.

Many relatives seem to be buried at Roshill Cemetery, so Clonbur comes up a lot, my Dad went there in the late 1960s.

So my question:  Where were Bridget 1, Thomas 5, Denis 4, William 6 and Martin 9 in 1901? Winifred 8 was found as a servant in household 21.

Thanks for any insight you can give me.

I haven't seen nieces/nephews disguised as children in Irish censuses.  But of course, maybe it happened.

Which children are missing from both censuses? Did you look at irishgenealogy.ie to see if they might have died?

The Census of 1901and 1911 are both searchable by names and places - it is not clear if you have done this already?

from 1864 State registration of BMD is listed and free of charge to search and download pdf records of the same - have you searched this too? You should be able to find all children alive or dead through this.

At this periosd of history the English and American finances were dominating the world and massive migration to towns inside Ireland happened to, so if you do not find people locallytry broader and broader searches in Ireland.
