Irish(Gaelic) Alternates for the Anglicized Hunt surname.

Kilbeagh (Mayo)Kilbride (Roscommon)Roscommon (Roscommon)

In researching the Hunt families of Kilbeagh, County Mayo, I've come across what I believe is one Gaelic translation of Hunt. That being Feighney. Are there any sources that can confirm this and expand on other Gaelic surnames that Anglicized to Hunt. Of particular question are there any sources or occurances where the surname Fallon adapted to Hunt?

Kelly, it looks like the name is sometimes mistranslated as Hunt:

Thanks for the references Patricia,

For future reference, I've attached 2 Baptism records that show examples of alternating Feighney and Hunt.

#1

Mary Hunt married Mark Henery in Castlemore Parish on 6 February 1860. Here Mary is recorded as Hunt

Their child Mark is Baptized in Carracastle Parish in September 1861. Here Mary is recorded as Feighney.

#2

This is a Kilshalvey Parish Baptism of a James Flanagan.

His parents are recorded as Auth? Flanagan and Mary Feighney(Hunt)

My Hunt ancestors were from Limerick. They are recorded in the Tithe Aplotment books as “Feighe”. Here is a source I found

Hunt—This name is the anglicised form of Feighry (O'Fíachra) in the districts surrounding Birr, and the districts that surround Sligo town and Tubbercurry in that county, likewise in Fermanagh and Southern parts of Donegal it is the anglicised form of Feighney (O'Fiachna) and Feghany (O'Fiachna) in North Sligo; of O'Foy (O'Fiaich) in Limerick, Mayo and Galway; and according to Father Woulfe of Mac Confiaich in Co. Mayo.

Thank you Anne for your expansive reply to my query.

I must explore the Tithe Aplotment Books, as well, to see if there are some obvious correlations.

My Hunt's are near Tubbercurry, County Sligo and in the Kilbride Parish of County Roscommon.

Hi.

I've been researching Hunt families of Leitrim, Longford, Roscommon, Mayo, and Sligo for many years.

I have a copy of a letter from 1991 concerning Catholic Hunt families in Carrick-on-Shannon and the surrounding townlands, Mostly Rinnacurreen, Coraughrim, Jamestown, Attirory, and some in Roscommon going back to the 1700s.

Desmond "Des" Hunt stated that his Hunt family was originally O'Fiacra. His oral family history was strong and they claim they came from the area of Sligo and Mayo in medieval times known as Hy Fiachra.

Over time the family spread out over North Roscommon then into Leitrim.

One name that is very common in this Hunt family is Eugene which is interchangeable with Owen going back hundreds of years.

This Hunt family was originally part of the Feeney/Feeny/O'Fiannaidhe Clan of North Mayo, particularly Finned/Finnod, in Sligo close to the the North Mayo border.

Hi Eric,

Thanks for your research.

A DNA link with a cousin led me to the Carracastle Catholic registers of County Mayo looking for links to my great grandmother Nabby Hunt, born c1840.

Nabby's mother was Anne Lane, which led me to the Kilbride, Roscommon, Lanesborough area.

There I found a record consistent for a marriage between Thomas Fallon and Anne Lane.

So, that's what brought my attention to possible variations of the Hunt surname.

Regards,

Tom A
